Place names that look or sound alike!
In the Fulton discussion topic I wanted to remind anyone from outside reading, that Fulton (the city) is not anywhere near Fulton County. Come to think of it, New York has quite a few of these place names that are similar to each other and could cause confusion, but are (usually) located nowhere near each other. Such as:
Cohocton and Coshecton
Rensselaer, Rensselaerville and Rensselaer Falls
Cortland and Cortlandt Manor
Waterloo and Westerlo
Oswego and Owego
Seneca Falls and West Seneca
Aurora and East Aurora (which is actually WEST of Aurora!)
Newark and Newark Valley (neither of which are near Newark, NJ)
Otego and Otsego County
Vernon and Verona (OK, so who else automatically thinks "Vernonveronasherrill"?)
Honeoye Lake and Honeoye Falls
Victor and Victory
Oriskany and Oriskany Falls
Hornell and Cornell (one is a college town, the other is a college)
I also find it funny that someone here on C-D confused Utica and Ithaca recently; since Ithaca has Cornell and Utica has Cornhill!
Anyone got any others? (They should be separated by a good distance and not located logically near each other)

I think these go together as the mutual co-champions.

The ones that come to my mind other than the ones the OP posted is when I'm up north (Essex county) and see signs for Mineville I always think of Minerva for some reason and sometimes get those confused.
That and whenever I mention Scotia (Schenectady county), out-of-towners think Nova Scotia.
I've also heard people confuse Schenectady and Schaghticoke and Schoharie when talking.
Glenville and Greenville and Glenwild. Ballston Lake and Ballston Spa, which are close but apparently two separate towns. Hague and Hagaman. Moriah and Mariaville. Keene and Keenesville. And, of course, Sacandaga Lake and Great Sacandaga lake.
There's also North Creek, Northville and North Pole, NY.
And the town of Adirondack which is in the Adirondacks.

And the two Altamonts. One of which recently had its name changed.
There is a Peru up in the North Country and a Peru down by Syracuse (though it's just a tiny hamlet). Same goes for the Bolivar in the Southern Tier and the Bolivar near Chittenango.
and in addition to the infamous "-EGOs" there are an awful lot of Indian derived placenames which look and sound suspiciously like the same thing transliterated in different ways, such as Cayuga and Keuka; Onondaga, Canandaigua, Honnedaga and Ganondagan...
