I will be relocating to the east coast next summer and just curious for advice now. I've never been in NY for a long period of time, perhaps 1 trip that lasted a week 20 years ago and thats it. So my job will be in the city. I wanted to buy a house out of the city because i have kids still in school and want a family neigborhood. My budget is $5 million. The places i am considering are Rye and Greenwich. Are there other places i should look? And how bad is the commute? Whats the price/ sqft and parcels of land cost in both places? Know of any really outstanding private highschools nearby? Any advice would be great!

Try Rye and Rye Country Day for a good private school. Scarsdale might be a good choice for a place to live too. In Tarrytown, the Hackley School is another school to think about. Maybe Fieldston and Riverdale Country School in the Bronx too.

I've lived in the greenwich area nearly all my life - for many years. Greenwich proper is great because the commute is less and it is convenient. Greenwich train station is great with many times available. Old Greenwich and areas of Riverside are very nice as well. For your budget, you're probably looking at an acre with 5-6k sf and new in Greenwich proper. Rye is great also. As far as schools, I agree with above. I think the westchester private schools are best. Rye Country Day and Hackley. Greenwich Country Day is a "family" school therefore not that open to new families. Of course, it's a matter of fit and preference. For girls, there is Greenwich Academy, boys Brunswick school. It's all individual and I've heard mixed reviews for those schools.
