I stayed in a mountain home in Delaware County and was wondering if the mountains there are high enough to cause altitude sickness?
|
How high up was this mountain home? I doubt anything in Delaware county is high enough to cause altitude sickness.
My "summer cabin" is at 2050 feet, and I've never noticed any altitude problems. (BTW -- I've never seen any mountain lions, bears, bobcats, etc. -- just deer, coyotes, and foxes)

Outdoor magaazine did an article on Mountain Lions a few years back. They said it was extremely difficult to pin down their exact range because of their solitary nature. I don't think there are an mountain lions in NY, but with the booming deer populations, they would do quite well. I think the latest census shows them as "confirmed" in Missouri and Arkansas. They could well be in Appalachia before too long.
When I was a boy, I was at my uncles farm in Delancey (Delaware county). I was walking from the barn to the house one night when I heard a bob cat off in the woods. Man, what a blood chilling scream it had! Gave me goosebumps!

How would I found out how high up it is? The house is in Margaretville, I think the road is called Fox Hollow. I read that some mountains in the Catskills reach 3500 ft. and some people get altitude sickness at that height, but other mountains in the area looked a lot higher than the elevation the house is on, so I am assuming the house elevation isn't anywhere near 3500 ft.
I still feel light headed and headachy (I never get headaches) with clogged ears after coming home from Margaretville on Sunday!
BTW: I spotted no animals on the property during the weekend, or anyplace in Margaretville, I saw three deers in Westchester County when I returned home on Sunday, right off the Saw Mill Pkwy in Yonkers!
Thanks for your response.

I live in Morris County - a small but busy lake community - we've had numerous encounters with black bears for years now, more and more every yr it seems. We've just recently begun hearing rumors about a mountain lion being in the lake area, supposedly pictures were taken but I haven't seen any yet so I can't confirm it. Last night around 10pm my wife said she saw TWO large cats run through our backyard !!

My ex girlfriends father had an encounter with a mountain or bobcat of some sorts and it was just in the Sullivan County area, in the town of Liberty. Pretty crazy.

Yeah, whats up with those black bears man. They've been running rampant. Remember that bear that mauled the baby like 3 years back?
