How far upstate are you looking to go? When you say mass transportation, do you mean within the region (good buses around Syracuse, for example), or do you mean mass transit options into NYC?

Some suburbs that might fit your criteria are: villages like Fayetteville, Manlius, Liverpool, North Syracuse and Baldwinsville near Syracuse; East Rochester, Brighton, Irondequoit and Pittsford near Rochester; Kenmore, Blasdell, Williamsville, Depew and Lancaster near Buffalo; New Hartford, NY Mills, Whitesboro and Yorkville in the Utica-Rome area; Scotia, Colonie, Latham, Bethlehem and Delmar in the Albany area; Johnson City, Endicott and Port Dickinson in the Binghamton area and Horseheads in the Elmira area. I've probably missed some places, but those are some off the top of my head.

Thanks in advance!
We moved to Nanuet 6 months ago and we love it!
It's very nice, very convenient with a train station just minutes away and a lot of restaurants, shops and not to forget Rockland Bakery :-)))
