Is Nanuet a good place to live?
Hi - I currently live in Bergen County NJ and am considering to move to Rockland County or Orange County NY. I work in Paramus, NJ and am looking for about a 30 minute commute. I have been looking at houses in Nanuet, NY and wanted to know what people think of the area. How are the schools, family life, shopping, local people, cultural diversity, etc?
Thanks in advance!

I believe Nanuet is fine. I'd go for it. You might like Orangeburg too.

Yup Nanuet is a very nice place. The Palisades Mall Complex is where most of the shopping/nightlife is in the area

As close as you are why don't you visit? Check it out on a weekend or at night when everyone is home. Most of Rt59 looks like Rt 17 not the most appealing. Also Bergen has always had a good reputation is there an advantage to moving into NY? Just curious..

We have been looking at a house in the Clarkstown area of Nanuet which is very residential. I am just not sure of the demographics and am curious of the safety and comfort levels of the area. Bergen County is expensive and I am trying to find a cheaper vicinity, but still close to work.

As long as you are looking within the Clarkstown school district vicinity, you are essentially looking at safe, moderately upper class neighborhoods. But in that vicinity, some parts of Clarkstown are actually East Ramapo school district. While East Ramapo has middle class and affluent neighborhoods, it also has a lot more urban neighborhoods, the schools are essentially under-class, and virtually entirely minority.
To some of the other posters-- I do not agree that the Palisades Mall is where the nightlife is. It is a basis of nightlife for some people-- Who want the big movie theater and chain restaurants. For a bit more mature or sophisticated nightlife, people go a further east to Nyack, with a mix of restaurants, bars, theater.
Route 59 itself is just a big commercial strip without much appeal, but there are some nice neighborhoods when you get off Rt 59.

This was a huge help as the house we were looking uses the East Ramapo school system :-(

Try Nyack, which is better, but probably more affordable.

Remember that by law a real estate agent can't tell you anything about a school system, just what school system the location is, so once you get that just keep posting on here so you can learn more.

In that vicinity, I'd take a look at Pearl River since the schools are good, and it's only 20-25 minutes to Paramus. If you don't mind a few extra minutes on the road, I'd look at New City, which is Clarkstown school district, as havoc315 mentioned. Nyack is a nice community, but the school performance is not on the same level as surrounding communities. It's not a bad district, but it does not rank at the same level as Clarkstown or Pearl River.
In Orange County, Warwick has good schools, but it's closer to an hour to Paramus.
