I'm just going by what they said in the D&C..... they said that cuts in the Rocester labor force would be minimal if any. Also, a medial research firm from Florida just announced that it will be moving to Rochester and creating at least 200 new jobs; probably more. I find the doom and gloom mentality WAY too exaggerated in many people's minds in the Rochester area right now. They've made it over worse times than this (does anyone remember the mid 80's?)

Default Not so good on the tech job arena

In the past few years I've had tons of friends leave Rochester (most heading to North Carolina) because of the layoffs and competition to get any rare tech jobs. If you do get one, they are much lower paying than similar jobs outside of Western New York.
We are actually considering moving because of this issue -- both my husband and I work in IT.

I thought you lived in Buffalo? NC is actually where I live right now. Looking to return to WNY next summer. NC isn't bad, but it's overrated.

Yes, I live in Elma near Buffalo, but grew up in Macedon, on the Wayne County/Monroe County border near Rochester. We have so many friends and family still in Rochester area -- we are there several times a month. Buffalo tech arena is as bad as Rochester in my opinion.
We're considering moving to Texas -- Corpus Christi area. Going down next week to check it out.

Yikes. That's a big move. I find it sad how NYS is making WNY a harder place to live. I am moving back and am very excited about it. I love the community feeling up there that can't be found down south. I'm originally from Greece and I'll probably either buy there, or Brighton/Henrietta. I was tempted by parma's very low, especially for ny, taxes. I found a 4 bedroom, 1900 sq ft. house for $175k with taxes of under 2500. I didn't think that existed in WNY anymore. At least not in monroe county.

www.syrres.com and sensis.com

Well we just moved here from rancho cucamonga, ca and it was the worst mistake. New york does not like to pay what your worth. We actually took a lower pay rate. MY husband is a phone tech. We have been looking for over a year. The only good place I can think of would be IBM or Lockheed but I think he would be making less.

Exclamation upstate New York

Living in upstate ny. all my life it is an exciting time now for high tech jobs. They have approved a new company coming in albany nano tech making chips. IBM plant. near albany. Another company soon too be in the works is a high tech alternative fuel systems car plant only the catch is the makers will only do business with the albany areas due too the fact that is where they are from and devloped this new technique using an alternative message. New york is a great place too live and raise your family we have lake george minutes away from albany saratoga race course and racino. The new six flags indoor park. The new sports dome in queensbury. I hope I have given you enough info anything relse I can help with just ask.......

Default work in Broome, Tioga, or Tompkins cty.

Read the replies to "Win". from all inc. the lady(doesn't like it here) from California. Can't argue, Cal. is a neat state. Probably was neater years back before everyone wanted to live there(see my thread..."new poster - 2cents worth"). Been there numerous times....$500k for a small ranch house on a tiny lot.....ouch! To the future NY'r....some job possibilities in the area: Lockeed Martin, BAE, IBM(a lot less than they used to have here), SUNY Binghamton, Cornell Univ., Ithaca college, etc..Was kinda tough job-wise here in the 90's, but it's been a slow/steady climb since then. I guess it's dependant on what you two have as priorities. If sun and surf turn you two on, might as well forget it. Rather than try to list the "good things", I do know that transplants from elsewhere have been generally happy with their reloc. Feel free to ask about Tioga cty, or better yet, do some more net searchin'.

Try this site www.essentialnyjobs.com It seems to me that besides the plethora of open nursing positions they are looking for software engineeers in Syracuse. Not only military (need clearance) but a lot of startups. Harris has a place in Rochester. The "New York Centers of Excellence" have targeted all of NYS, upstate and downstate, for technology research consortiums as the foundation of new business. I'm sure you can find something.

True, you'll find that CA, OR, WA payrates are higher, they always were in whatever field. Then again you can live better here when you're paying 1/10th the price for the same house.
