Question Parents looking to move upstate. Need Advice.

My parents are a low income older couple looking to find an affordable place to rent in upstate NY. Preferably less than $700 monthly. My parents are without a car so that may also be a problem. Any Advice would be appreciated.

I noticed with the Plattsburgh Housing Authority, they have a lot of nice programs for seniors, that I thought the OP would like for his/her parents.

Smile Your parents are old enough

to qualify for soooo many things here. I would google/open the site Clinton County Office of/for the Aging. There is also a publication from the Press Republican every month called the Senior Sentinel which has the food menus at all the housing units.....there are several with good hot meals and lots of activities including bus trips, etc.........I wanted my Mom to move up here but she didn't do it.......I regret that a lot since this is a great place for older folks with a ton of programs and volunteer activities at the hospitals and Meals on Wheels, and a couple of huge parties for seniors every year with themes, etc.........I would definitely check out the Clinton County site first to see all that they offer. I truly think it will surprise you. Good luck to you. This might also surprise you, but there are a few elders from other countries here now as well.......a cute Russian couple, and some Chinese and then some Long Islanders as well.......not exactly foreign but with diverse backgrounds. Quite a few residents are here because of the ties with the college and downstate and moved their folks up here to retire, also the Air Force retirees come back as well because they have fond memories of Plattsburgh and this area.......Your parents will make friends from everywhere! People are friendly and also the services are excellent..........no elder abuse threats around here.....the facilities are really checked. Not like where my Mom is in the south..........NY state taxes are high, but they are very union and regulated.........health care workers get a decent wage even in places like a nursing home, etc......... The workers are happier than those in the south and I think treat the elderly better because of it.
