Does anyone have any info on the job "situation" in Wolcot or Wolcott, NY? All I know about it is it's near Lake Ontario? A family member is thinking of relocating there - if anyone has any links to a local newspaper or someplace that would give employment opportunities, what the lifestyle is, etc., it would be greatly appreciate.
Thanks in advance! ![]() |

It's Wolcott, and it's a small rural village with a very small downtown of a block or two. Not much there, a Ford dealer, a school, pizza parlor, ice cream stand, possibly a local clothing store, churches, an apt complex, cemetery. There is a medical clinic nearby. It's the kind of place that people scrape by.
The town is along one of the roads that runs from Oswego to Rochester. I believe many people drive to Auburn, Oswego, Fulton, and even Rochester to work. Otherwise there's truck driving and work in some of the food canning factories and orchards/farms or summer work on the lake. There's also a discount mall within reasonable driving distance (less than an hour) to work. I haven't been there in a while. Sorry I can't give you a better picture than that. It's not a place I visit often. Sodus Point or Pultneyville nearby are much nicer, small but more touristy. |

Thank you for your response - we had looked on the net for the area and didn't find much, but got the impression there wasn't a lot in the immediate area. We've never been there and we hope our family member is doing some research....in the meantime, I figured I'd do some of my own.......

Wolcott is more of a summer tourist town. A lot of people from Rochester and Syracuse have weekend lake houses out there..including my sister and brother-in law. It's a really nice charming town; but the jobs are going to be in the larger towns or cities in the wny/upstate region. It's about 45 minutes east of Rochester, and about an hour west of Syracuse.

I live there, so maybe I can give you some info. Overall, if you like the rural setting, Wolcott isn't a bad place to live. Winters can be pretty nasty-long, snowy and grey. But summer is usually pretty nice-mid 70-85 degrees and sunny. It's cooler up here along the lake in the summer time. If you like fishing, hunting, boating, living on the lake, it's pretty nice. We pretty much skip Spring and sometimes fall as well.
If, however, you need to work for a living, Wolcott is pretty rural. You won't find much by way of a decent job in the immediate area. $8-$10 per hour and "maybe" benefits is considered pretty good. I personally drive 50 miles (one way) to work in Rochester. Syracuse is about the same distance in the other direction. Also, just like the rest of NYS, the taxes here are pretty outrageous. They just jumped up our 1800 sq ft modular ranch by over $40,000. We did NOTHING to the house this year. They've reassessed us 3 out of the last 4 years since we built the house. They jumped up the assessment on the place across the street by over $100,000. I couldn't BELIEVE what they were going to be assessed for. So, be ready for the tax situation. NYS is #3 in total tax burden (sales, income, property) in the nation. Personally, as soon as we retire we are OUT OF HERE. |

Thank you all who replied -we have passed the info along. We know about the taxes in NYS and the "politics" - we lived in NYS most of our lives. The taxes were one of the reasons we left the state last year. We were in eastern NYS and didn't know much about the Wolcott area, other than a rough idea of it's location. Thank you again for the info!

I had lived in Sodus Point for 5 years, and it is near Wolcott, about 15 mins. west on 104.
There is Ag. work, fruit trees, and all. It is a pretty little place, but, the job openings are limited.:confused |
