Default Places to live between Bergen County NJ and Poughkeepsie

My husband and I are looking to possibly relocate. He has a possible job prospect in Bergen County NJ, and I have possible job prospect in the Poughkeepsie area. Can anyone recommend a good town somewhere in the middle? We have an 8 month old and will be looking most likely to rent. We are looking for someplace very affordable, with good childcare options and ultimately with a good school district and lower cost of living then where we are now.
Any advice would be appreciated!

That's a long drive between the two. Where are you moving from?

Thats tough, no where near each other. Bergen Co. if VERY expensive. Half way point may be Newburgh area and I would NOT recommend their schools. When I say half way your still an hr. or more from Bergen. If he works in Bergen he would prob. want to be in Monroe or Goshen, both expensive towns and high taxes but that wouldnt put you anywhere near where you have to be. Doesnt sound to good.

Yeah Newburgh stinks and the more southern areas of Orange county are expensive. You can look at Walden still a drive but Valley Central school is good.

I was hoping to hear better news than that! On paper, it doesn't look too bad....was hoping for approximately a 45 minute commute for each of us....but beginning to see that may not work out like we were hoping. I haven't been in upstate NY in years and am not too good with NJ.....not sure about traffic and never had to worry about schools before. Our daughter is just 8 months, so still have a little while before we need to think about schools.

Not sure how the schools are anymore but look into Marlboro or the Balmville area since your daughter is too young for sure school, not sure how that's holding up either, maybe Fishkill.

The halfway point is monroe....We live in dutchess and dh commute to bergen..so I have "timed" it..the exact halfway from dutchess to the GWB area is woodbury commons in harrison...45 south of our home and 45 minutes north o the bridge via route 17 up to the thruway. That is where we are thinking of going.....although...we were in white plains for the first time in 2 years to "hang out" and I was amazed at how they have cleaned up the city.

Sorry I haven't posted in a while...remember the 9 month old and still working full time! thanks for everyone's response. My husband now accepted a position with his office in Hackensack, and I may be able to get a job in the Middletown area, so, we will be looking a little north of the Hackensack area. I will be posting a new thread to reflect this.
