Im in Malone near the Adirondacks ..environment is perfect but too many uneducated rednecks , no jobs..no frsh vegetable or fruit gets up this way..hard to be a vegetarian here..though we manage with unripe chemically storaged produce.

I'm not sure where HoneyChrome lives but I live in the town of Lansing just 10 minutes from Ithaca and I can tell you we haven't had 4 distinct seasons in years. (I've lived here over 50 years). This past year I started heating mid-September and just shut it off mid-May. It is gray here day after day...over 200 + cloudy days a year. If you what sunshine in NY you have to go north closer to Plattsburgh or maybe down near New Paltz...but Ithaca...no. Oh and we aren't reviving the hippie days...they never left. There are many good things about Ithaca as others have mentioned but weather is not it. Oh and the taxes....yikes.

Ithaca? Mmmmaybe...
Hey Veggie cook,
Yes, Ithaca is very nice, and there are lots of crunchy people to play with. I grew up in the Ithaca area and lived in Ithaca '90-'94. I moved to Atlanta in '94, and I love it here.
I'm not necessarily recommending Atlanta, but there are plenty of beautiful, liberal small towns in GA, NC, and TN that are comparable to Ithaca without the winters, and without the taxes. Athens, GA comes to mind as Ithaca of the south. Relatively small university town with great weather and a huge lake nearby(Hartwell). Finding a decent job would a lot easier than in Ithaca. For your veggie fix, we have "Flying Biscuit"s.

Some other places you might want to check out: Narrowsburg, NY (near the PA border); Phoenicia, NY (near Woodstock, and in easy reach to the thru-way and larger towns).
Neither is as large as Ithaca.

Part of my blog worth a glance if you'll be in the Mid-Hudson Valley. I concur with posters about Ithaca - lovely!
