Hi there,
I'm an Australian artist/ student looking for a town somewhere within four hours train/ bus ride from NYC to use as a location for a film based art work set in Fredericton, NB, Canada. Fredericton has mainly large 19th century weatherboard houses and lots of trees and parks, as well as a river (although a river would just be a bonus!) the downtown section contains newer buildings, but still has a somewhat dated "mainstreet" feel. I've never traveled this area so any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Google maps and Wikipedia are only getting me so far...
Thanks so much for your help!

Nyack is often used as a filming location for that type of setting, and it even has a river.

I beg to differ. I went to college in New England and Nyack resembles a New England town with a central square about as much as Times Square does.

Saratoga Springs NY. Surrounding main street (Broadway) area are beautiful old restored homes. Hudson River is nearby.

I've seen Saratoga Springs and I've seen Lenox. Lenox, HANDS DOWN is the typicial New England town. Saratoga's beautiful, but in a Beaux Arts way - not at all like the New England village greens with their lack of ornamentation.

it looks like Nyack is the winner. Lovely old houses, greenery, a river, newer main street and only an hour from NYC. Perfect, thanks so much!

I was going to say that Kingston, which is on the Hudson River, might be another place to consider. Possibly parts of Troy, Schenectady(maybe the Stockade section) or Albany too.
