We are a family of three. Our son is in 5th grade. Have lived in Maine all our lives but are looking to relocate somewhere warmer, with less snow. We love the beauty of Maine. We are looking for a peaceful area, laid back, country living. Short commute to hiking, fishing, boating, swimming, etc. Need to be able to find a job within 1/2 hour commute or so. Catskills are beautiful but still want it a bit warmer without getting so far that it's too humid/hot in the summer. Our son is into rabbit hunting and fishing. We have a center console and would like to be able to use it within a few hours distance from home. We have never lived in an apartment, and really don't want to start now. Looking to rent a home in the $700 - $1000/month range. Anyone have suggestions? What are we looking at for changes? Are we crazy? Have thought of moving as far south as Maryland. We have family in NY, ME and NH - we'd like to keep it within a days travel to visit. Please help! Thanks ahead of time!

Nobody can really advice you, since there are so many personal factors involved. Jobs are #1 concern and on these times better follow work then vice versa. Again its a personal issue.
As far as I can tell, no place in New England or NY will be that different. I would look at NC as an option. Its a very beautiful place and you may enjoy it. Other then that, people I know of, went as far as Boulder, CO and northern AZ. These places will undoubtedly offer you a different experience, with housing and taxes still on the reasonable side. However, if you cannot find a job, it will not cut it.
