Hello all, I'm seeking a bit of advice.

I'm born and raised in NY but I currently live in FL. It's been four years now. We moved because of the weather and my uncle (from my mothers side) encouraged us to come down here.
We bought a house in FL, cash, so we've got no mortgage.
I've lost my mom less than three months ago in death.
I only have my father, incompacitated sister, and my younger brother here. Our family from my moms side who live in FL have abandoned us.
Now, my dad wants to move back to NY, where all his more supportive side of the family are.

I have a love/hate relationship with Florida and New York. Sometimes I love weather somedays I don't. The people have fake personalities, I can't stand them. I love driving and driving in NY feels like a task. I'm not a fan of public transportation and cold weather.

But I love my house here. It's over 3,500 square feet and I feel like there's no way that we're going to find a house as big as this one for less than $500,000 in New York. That disappoints me - the thought of downgrading....

I'm torn.

What are the chances of selling our first house in Florida in these economic times? Is it even a good idea to come back to NY just because we've got more family and supposively may gain more support? Is my dad going way too fast? Well, I guess we won't feel so alone anymore up there....

What do you think?

Where in NY would you be coming back to?

Well, in much of New York State, the driving is great. It is only NYC (and to a lesser extent the other 'big' cities) where public transportation is a viable alternative anyway. As far as cold weather, well... that's just a fact of life.

Instead of thinking of it as downgrading, consider that anything over 500 sq. ft./person is morally indefensible in a world with limited resources not to mention the expense of heating and cooling such a palace. Do you really need a separate bedroom for your harpsichord?

OK, I was being a bit of a pill there, but seriously, going from 3,500 to 2,000 sq. ft. is like going from a fur coat to a leather jacket, not a burlap sack.

Maybe it is a matter of how close you want to live to your family in NY. Maybe something in Orange County would do.

You made no mention of employment needs so i'll assume thats not an issue. You allready moved once to benefit your family and from what you wrote it sounds like you have a life that you enjoy in Florida. I think you are better off staying where you are.

We just sold my mothers house in New City and the real estate market is a mess. The taxes alone make me cringe . Driving as you mentioned is a nightmare with pot holes & patches everywhere.

If your dad is insistant perhaps there are other family members who would keep and eye on him up there. Overall I would say stay where your at.

Considering what has happened to the housing market you stand a great chance at a big house especially in places like long island,or western,ny,and other upstate areas. My suggestion is to go on realtor.com and do a search for homes based on zip code or town.I was born in NYC,moved to long island when I was young, was away while with the air force, then we moved to FL in 2003 and came back 6 months later. In 2008 we moved to western,ny and now we're attempting to go back to long island. This time it will be for good. With the housing market coming down so much,it has made it almost as affordable to live there as opposed to here where we are bored to death.

Good points, as the Syracuse area is #1 in terms of having the lowest foreclosures out of the top 100 biggest metro areas in the US. It's 18th in affordablility too.
