Believe me moonchild, I know exactly what you mean. In the 10 short months I've been back, the reality of the cost of living and the run-down nature of many towns has sent me into shock. I have no choice at this point because I need to care for my aging mom. But even with that, We all have to live somewhere and NY is for sure a very unique state and someone said it correctly that if you grew up in NY it is difficust at best to live anywhere else. Believe me, I understand wanting to flee yet again but I am getting too old to keep running and I know proof positive that the South is not for me anymore. I just have to figure out how to make this place work out for my family. Lots of great places in this country but I love NY dearly.
Best wishes to you in your move.

Default Wherever you move, there is an adjustment

I am not pro any particular area because I have lived in many places and find that each one takes a period of adjustment to feel happy. Whenever I am new in an area, I find the people cold and distant. That was particularly true for California. It is a different culture out there and different people. The high fences around the homes makes it difficult to know your neighbors. Eventually you realize that they are usually out on the weekends hiking or at the beach and you join their lifestyle and become one of them--more independent. It takes time but after a few years, I learned to blend in and loved it.

You need time to make new friends, join activities and travel around. Eventually you find an identity and learn the lifestyle.

I do agree the grass is not always greener somewhere else but why did you move. You weren't happy where you were. It doesn't mean you will be happier where you are going but do give it some time. Sometimes it will work out and sometimes it won't. Maybe it will just give you a better appreciation for where you left. If you learned something, then it was worth it. Find things to be happy wherever you are. But there are places that will make you happier, too. Finding the right place for you is the key. Moderator cut: advertising Carol

Default take your neighbors with you

funny how NE's say nobody is from charlotte originally and then say how rude the people are? Who are the people? They could be your fellow NE's that are down here. It certainly can't all be the southereners since there are so few of them.

I agree 100%.....it isn't southerners that I find to be rude and unwelcoming here in NC...its mostly fellow NE transplants that think they are better than everyone they left behind in their hometows, as well as better than most of the "natives" in NC....of course I realize this is a broad generalization that definitely does NOT apply to all transplants in NC; but its something I've noticed for sure. The transient-type "community" vibe you get in the triangle is what I like least about it.

I have seen other yankees get treated as you say, but in all honesty they deserved it. Those yankees constantly complained, pointed out how the north was better, blah, blah. If the north is so much better, go back to being taxed to death and not being able to afford a lifestyle. And ignorance is alive and thriving in NY too, don't fool yourself in thinking that the south has the market cornered on ignorance. Ignorance lives all over the country.

I soo agree with you! I moved from NJ last year to Nashville, Tn and its the best move I made in my life. I have never heard Yankee here as there are so many transplants from all over the US. I know a few people that complain how they hate it here. Let them go back to being overtaxes, spit at. NJ truly deserves the Jokes people make of it.
I lived in LI before NJ and NJ scores the lowest, but I now I consider Tennessee my home.

Default it needs to be reminded

It needs to be reminded that fully 99 out of 100 people that move from the North to the South and have lived there less than, say, 10 yrs. are all so giddy with excitement about their new home. I was part of that number. It was fresh, vibrant, everything is new,and it was needed.
However:
Only 1 out of 100 have the same excitement after about 10 years. yes, there are some that stay forever and even like it but those 99 out of 100 will be honest and say they at least know fully what every dissatisfied person is talking about. Yes, only a few may qualify it with their continued joy but most admit the honeymoon is over, even if they plan on staying. Low taxes and cost of living are much less imortant than they were from day 1 or year 1 or 2 or 3......
So then, season your words and excitment nicely because you may have to eat the words someday. My numbers may not be exact but my point is well founded. I will also object to anyone that harbors bitterness forever. We cant go on with hatred for the south and live peacable lives but I do think honest discussions are healthy. One would be partially right when saying, its what you make it. I couldnt make of it any longer so I did what was right. I quit living in misery and left. countless others have to do the same thing. maybe you too one day. Enjoy it while it lasts. Really!

I was planning on moving to nc this summer as a matter of fact. Had two job offers, spoke to people from this NC forum and everything. Ended up turning down both jobs. I just got scare to be down there with nothing to do no, place to go. I was also scared staying up here: fear I am being outpriced my own neighbohood. I don't regret staying. I just said to myself whatever you think you want if you can't find in NYC sweetie you find it anywhere. NYC is the center of it all, culturally, educationally, economically, socially and honey if it ain't here, it just don't exist. so I promised myself whatever it is that I think I want I'm just going to have to make it happen here. And surprisingly, I'm ok with that. You have to make your own ode to life. Ya feel me?

sassy1, I just love your style. You talk about your NYC attitude on another thread and you will see my own little "attitude" on these forums now & then 'cause we all gotta vent once & awhile. I admire your foresight in seeing some of the warning signs moving South. I couldnt agree more that NY and mostly NYC has everything anyone on earth could ever want or need. If we aint got it, it doesnt exist. We New Yorkers are really spoiled with the best, aren't we? And as I said somewhere, I came back North and was horrified at the taxes but further mentioned that I will just have to figure out how to make it work for me & my family because I aint-a-gonna budge NO MO! LOL. Some things are just worth figuring out how to make it work. I really wish you well because I do realize you need a financial break on these crazy taxes and cost of living. Paying these taxes gives us a certain right to B--CH.

Ingnorance is wherever you find it. I've met some of the rudest people in Murfreesboro/Nashville. While some of the people I've met in NYC have been the nicest people I've ever met. Yet my dad tells an entirely different story. Let him tell it, NYC is the last place anyone should want to live outside of Baghdad.

I took my girlfriend there for her first time 2years ago, and she fell in love. So now she argues with people here who say "why would you ever want to live in New York?"

So to the starter of this thread, I feel you. I know the South can be as rude, if not ruder, than Northerners are pegged to be. And I've had experiences where Northerners (esp. my family in Connecticut) assume I'm not aware of a lot of things because I'm from the South. And they've never traveled outside of their state. You just can't escape ignorance. The town you landed in is probably the problem. Just like it's probably not wise to move to any NYC neighborhood without researching it, you have to do the same here. There are plenty of us Southerners ready to embrace you amazing Northerners with open arms.

Best of luck in what you decide to do.
I was in Tennessee and the only people that liked me were the women probably because I had all of my teeth. really though alot of people in tennessee hated us New Yorkers all we had to do was open our mouths and they gave you a dirty look. This was all surrounding nashville and I was wondering where is that southern hospitality? People are nicer in NY we dont care where you come from We will be your friend just think how many know the turkish guy that pumps your gas or owns a store you talk with him like anyone else and I love people from down south that come hear I love the way they talk and when they are here they are so nice. They drive around with that stupid confederate flag on there trucks down there, come on maybe I should drive around with an italian flag or something. we are all americans are we not ?anyway I hope you enjoy living here, NY has everything from beaches to the city to mountains and farms try and get that other places the only draw back is the cost of living but you get what you pay for. I could be moving to florida for year round fishing but that does not mean I hate NY I was born here and it will always be home. take care
