I have lived in the south (western NC) for 20 years now...My husband is being relocated by his company to Ithaca and we made a scouting trip up there a few weeks ago...I can not wait to move! What a breath of fresh air! I can not wait to get away from the small town mentality and the confederate flag of hate. I LOVE upstate NY and can't wait to get there! I love NC too, it will always be home...but for better or worse, a lot of the south is stuck in the past so I understand where you are coming from with your remarks. Ithaca is just like western NC but without the mountains and the arcaic attitudes towards change, growth and acceptance of other races and cultures. I am counting the days!

I told my husband today that I'm catching a ride with the next car I see with NY license plates. I don't care where in NY they are going, but if I see a Bills Sticker or Sabers, I know I'm coming home. Charlotte is a huge Yankee melting pot. Where is Zebulon?

Upstate is scary? You'll start an interstae battle with that comment LOL....
As for the movie, Deliverance? That was one creepy hillbilly movie. Put a whole new meaning on the term "inbred"

Just kidding I have friends and family up there. And I have been in some out of the way places up there and never felt funny or been treated hostile like in huckleberry land down south." Hey gomer can you check my oil?"

I wouldn't say moving south is my BIGGEST mistake. I'm not sure it was a "mistake" at all -- it's been an interesting learning experience. Of course that could be said of just about any third world nation, as well.
Seriously, there are some good things about the south. Grits for example. I like grits. Sweet tea. Magnolia blossoms. Antebellum architecture. Grits ... oh wait, I said that.
Uhm... yep, that's about it.
I have also run into the "we hate Yankee" mentality, and in all honesty, I did move here with a wide open mind. While I admit to being less than enthusiastic about the South -- that has been a byproduct of being ostracized for the past ten years, by virtue of my NY roots.
What I find most interesting about this thread:
Why are people from the southern state forums popping in to the NY forum to begin with, just to dog northern transplants who are having a hard time adjusting. Where are all those southern manners we hear so much about?
Isn't it enough that we're made to feel unwelcome in the "real south" -- and perhaps even in the "cyber south?"
If a southerner were to move north and felt like a fish out of water (and I can't see how they wouldn't), and then naturally turned to fellow Southerners for commiseration, I doubt the NY forumers would follow them to their state boards and tell them if they didn't like it, they should just go home and take all their rebel friends with them.
And they say NYers are rude. Sheesh!

I too have run into the "we hate Yankees" mentality. The biggest fallacy going is that the South is friendly and the North is not. I grew up in CT and found the people there to be absolutely wonderful.
Would I say that moving to the South was a mistake"? ABSOLUTELY!!! There is kind of a soul-less existence here of strips malls, traffic, and attitude. I for one cannot wait to move back North.
