My folks moved from LI to New Bern 14 years ago and have loved it. All Northerners in their community anyway.

Sorry you are having such a bad experience down south. I too grew up in the lower Hudson Valley and about all I miss is the ethnic diversity and decent bread. These people in Richmond Va wouldn't know "crust" if it hit them in the head.

Although I have found that the "War" is part of life and I often hear 'your not from around here?" I have never met the hostility you mentioned. I realize that you are in a smaller town where change comes slowly but I have always been made to feel welcome.

I hope you find what your looking for and remember when your back in NY probably sitting in traffic or cussing out the pot hole you just hit remember this is what you wanted.

I am moving in 3 weeks to Florida. I have lived there before and I am moving not by choice, because but husband's job circumstances.

Yesterday, my daughter, who just graduated from college, and I went to visit the subway museum in Brooklyn. It was a wonderful experience. Although I was born and raised in Manhattan, I haven't been to Brooklyn very much and we got lost. We asked directions from a man on the street and he walked with us to show us where to go. Who says New Yorkers don't care?????

We ate lunch on the street from a hot dog vendor, rather than in a restaurant. Where else in this country can you experience that?

I told my husband of our day's journey and all he said was, "Ah, I really miss that."

We have lived on LI for over twenty years, but how many people realize what a diverse state this really is? You have NYC, the beaches of LI, the mountains and farms of Upstate. Where else can you experience all that in one state? Yes, I am going to miss all that. Precisely the same as I did 30 years ago when I moved.

Default NY to FL

HockeyMom..........you will find that moving to Fl. will be "different" than living on the Island, true, there are many, many, Long Islanders here, and there are alot of things you can't get here but only up North......a great rye bread, a hard roll, true corn beef sandwich, Italian Ices, a great bakery I would die for, NY pizza............here the water is full of condensation so the dough, crust and bakery items are so so.

I'm originally from da Bronx.........and I go back so often just for the food,
parks, trains, Orchard Beach, City Island, friends. New Yorkers I swear are more friendly. FL. is a transient state, people coming and going all the time
by the time you make friends, their either leaving or dying. There's a saying down here, that Fl. is the waiting room to heaven. I believe this to be true.

Lots of thirdy-somethings moving here with young families and finding that by the time they pay property taxes, HOI and commuting costs, they are paying close to what they were running away from. And you know that old saying,
you can never go back home, once you're here awhile, that seems to be true.

Good Luck on your move, I wish you and your family well.

I am also from the Hudson Valley area but have lived in western NYS for the last 20 years. I am at the stage in life where the winters are a bit to much with the lake effect machine and the gray skies. The older I get, the more my bones hurt, and I am by no means over the hill yet, so we are planning on moving to San Antonio TX where we have a son who has been there for almost 7 years. Have been to the Alamo city many times and hopefully it will be home for us within a year

We are leaving Brooklyn to live in Charlotte in July. I have to say I will not miss this place one bit. Maybe because I see how Brooklyn has changed and how we don't belong here anymore. I can't take walking in the street and no one speaking a word of English. The streets are dirty. There is nothing for the kids to do all summer as camp costs an arm a leg and they may take your first born if you don't pay up. All the swimming pools are in undesirable locations and the beach is filthy...So off we move to NC where the grass is green, the skies are blue and there is a community pool and PARKING where ever you go...GOODBYE alternate side...I won't miss you at all!!

By the way we have visited NC and did not find anyone to be rude or nasty! Just the opposite people look you in the face and talk to you!!

whoa....lets get one thing strait...I love New York (all of it) and am looking very forward to returning, but it is NOT the greatest state. it is one of the greatest places, but not the greatest state' if that makes any sense. The apathetic morons in Albany couldn't govern a cornfield let alone a state with 20 million citizens. Downstate is over-represented, Upstate is under-represented; taxes are too high everywhere, and state civic pride is very low ( regional civic pride i.e....NYC, Long Island, Buffalo, Rochester, Fingerlakes, Syracuse, Capital area etc, exists, but nobody is proud to be in "New York State")

Sad, but true. I think that in order to run for office in NYS, you need to take an IQ test- if you score low enough, they'll let you campaign.

Take a look at Richmond but then keep on going...it's the same here. We moved here from upstate NY last summer....this summer we're going back. So many reasons....and New Yorkers know them all. Can't wait to get back to the good food and friendly people!
