So you are being pretty hypocritical when telling those who say they like living in WNY that they shouldn't, or for those who wantto return after living someplace else the same thing. And btw you are also wrong about your reply to silencegood's comment about taxes...not even in WNY does a $80-100k house have taxes that are 8k-12k a year, that person was correct with the $4-5k range. You seem so eager to "knock us back to reality" when people talk about liking upstate ny and wanting to live there or enjoy living there already...but why? You're gone now, it shouldn't matter to you at all.
You're the one who is painting an unrealistic picture..go to buffalo.com plug in a house for 325k in AMherst NY and see what taxes come up - wake up - the property taxes are a nightmare in new york and that's a fact. The winters are cold and brutal. That's a fact. More people are moving out than moving in. You have an aging population which will tax the county even further in years to come. Your taxes are going UP not down. That's a fact.

Wow, that Buffalo.com site is good. Now I see why I can never move back there! Approximately $10,000 in property taxes for a $325,000 house! Whoa! In California one would only pay $3,250, approximately -- what a difference. And then you have to figure in heating costs, all that snow, etc. Retiring there would be impossible on a fixed income. Well, that sealed the deal for me! Thanks for the info.

Wow, I am not alone.
I am a native New Yorker and I live in sleepy Raleighwood.
I live "itb" (inside the beltline), if it weren't for that I would be miserable.
I have honestly met like 2 people that were native North Carolinians and the others were all fellow Yankees. I am finishing at NC State next year and then it is back up north for me. There are way too many rednecks and way too much real tree for this northerner!
I rarely leave downtown Raleigh b/c I have no idea what could happen to me in some little town like Benson or Garner...
Well, good luck 2 u Yankees deep in the heart of the dixie!

Here's some facts: I have a daughter who is a NICU nurse practitioner and her hubbie is a lawyer...they have lived all over the east coast and moved to Brighton NY last summer and recently closed on their first home. Could they live and thrive in CA, NC, VA, MA. etc etc etc ???? In a heart beat, but they love the feel and beauty of upstate NY and have moved back to raise a family....tell them why they should not be here and it will fall on deaf ears. If you personally have lived here, moved away and will never come back, good for you...but stop with the constant berating of a state which, contrary to what you tout, PEOPLE DO LOVE!!!!!!!!
In other words, "Get over it already"................

Carpetbagger. Using the South for cheap quality education and affordable cost of living... complaining the entire time. This is why Southerners have an attitude towards northerers.

I am just stating the facts - that's not to say many people still choose to stay and make it work for them DESPITE these inarguable facts - I say more power to em...good luck to all...this is not a constant berating of a state - don't be so defensive about your choice to live there - or dance around that it has its challenges..you're not wrong for living there - it's your choice- I am a native Buffalonian - spent thirty years there - I think I know the area very well and am entitled to my opinion -and you are entitled to disagree...

Its not home because "family" isnt here, and things are different. Born & raised in NY, moved to NC in 98. There are things I miss, and imagine if enough of my family was still alive, I'd be more home sick then I am. But there is alot about NC I love, Mainly the weather. Ive started a new life for myself and my son. I was a single parent, have met and settled down with a good man. There haas not been many times I've regretted the move. The 3rd year here was the hardest, but that was my own doing for leaving a good job to relocate closer to the beaches. Now I can go to the beach or the mountains for a day trip and I Love it. but I still call NY home!

My defensive response comes from the, yes, constant berating of this area of NY, yours included. There seems to be some sort of obsession for some , like yourself, who have moved away from the area to constantly knock it as though they are reaffirming their own reasons to leave....And I was pointing out there are as many who are very content and happy here and MOVE BACK from the "golden triangles" of the country they just aren't as compelled to post in this forum.

Yes, the taxes are high but the incomes are higher than the natl average and the housing prices are lower so there is a balancing out. As for the weather, we have had some of our warmest winters on record year after year recently and IMO, I believe there is a climatic shift going which will make for more moderate temps in this part of the country .....maybe not Palm Beach but snow levels have already dropped off and winter snow comes later and later.......White Christmas' aren't a given anymore in NY.....

But you will, as others, continue to knock this state and we who live here and thrive and enjoy it will just shake our heads and smile....sorry you missed the good parts of this state

I think much of the hostility comes from people NOT being able to afford to live in NY. You have to know that a nurse and a lawyer make a very good salary put together. That is likely upper middle class. And that is what NY is becoming----upper class, uber-upper middle class, and the very poor. Wake up people and realize this.

I am familiar with Rochester (Brighton). If you can afford to live in Brighton, Pittsford, Perinton, Victor, blah, blah we all know the Rochester neighborhoods---then living cost isn't going to be a problem for you.

What I am gathering here from this thread, is that the people that LOVE NY, are also really angry---because they can't and I mean CANNOT get back due to economic reasons only. I am angry, along with sad. The only way I could live in UNY again would be if I was collecting welfare. And let's not get me started on that and how easy it is here. The titanic is sinking people, and you can sit and hold a cocktail and listen to the violins all you want.

40 degrees North!!!!! Never go below that line that lies just North of the Southern boundary of Pennsylvannia. This has been my general rule and many, many people I know who have moved South of moved South and came back North tell me that my "stay North of the 40th parallel" makes total sense and they wish they would have followed my 'rule'. I can't explain it, but whenever I go below that line, no matter what part of the county I'm in (East Coast, West Coast, Midwest)...something feels amiss and it is more pronounced once you cross the Mississippi River. Its the whole spectrum, culture, natural environment, politics and I enjoy the four seasons.
