SJennings,
I am already stationed at Fort Drum and am deployed to Iraq. My wife is in California. When I return, we'll be looking for a place on the market. (Bad experiances with post housing.) Gouverneur would be exactly what we're looking for. We have one small well behaved dog, no kids. We have never had complaints from landlords and we tend to keep to ourselves for the most part as far as neighbors are concerned, so we don't bug them either. I will be returning to Fort Drum in November and would be very interested in seeing pictures/details/rent cost for the property if it is still available. You can email me anytime, both my wife and I will be able to see and respond to your message. Thanks!

This is CRAZY!!!
I like many others are doing the same thing, looking online and finding nothing but a brick wall to run into. I have tried ahrn.com which is provided by the housing offices, but nothing is really available. We are looking for a 2 to 3 bedroom apartment/home. I am getting rid of my dog because it is HARD to find anyone or anything who will accept animals. Where else would you recommend looking? DO you know of any sites or where to look? I will be there in early May. If you know of anything please let me know!!!

It is located on the black river, so the view is nice and you can go boating if you like. There is a 10 o'clock curfew for minors, so it keeps the streets safe at night. The latest news has been about a few vandalisms into cars and someone pissing outside a bar, but other than that it is quiet. Many people are out and about during the day and evening walking their dogs and kids in strollers. There is also a park/baseball/tennis/skate park in town which I walk my dog and son to daily and is very popular. There is the local coffee shop, many diners, grocery store, Ace, a few bars and nice restaurants and a McDonalds...it is deffinately a slower pace than what you are probably used to, but it is cleaner and less busy than Watertown. The commute is 10 to 15 minutes to Drum and the same to Watertown. Wal-mart is also about 15 minutes away in Loweville, Watertown, and near Fort Drum. The main interstate is about 15-20 minutes away and Syracuse and Utica (near I-90) are both about an hour and 10 minutes away. Lake Ontario is 30-40 minutes as well as Canada. There is a lot to do up here from skiing and snowmobile riding (allowed in the village of Carthage during the winter) to hiking and biking or kayaking on the river or lake. Rent is a little high, but if you take your time looking, you can get lucky. Unfortunately people with pets usually don't get the best rentals. We found a 3 bedroom apt for $950 which includes heat and allowed our dog with no pet security deposit. If you can find a deal like that, it will save you a lot in the winter. Anyways, I hope this helped. Good luck.

I tried the local newspaper and craigslist and didn't have much luck finding houses for rent.
Also, what municipalities near Fort Drum are nice? Felt Mills?
Ideally, I would like a place where I can feel safe walking my dog or that is near nature. Thanks for your input.

Isn't it really cheap to buy in upstate NY? Maybe that is a better option for you to consider...

Re
I currently live in Gouverneur, just moved from Lowville. We lived in military housing in Philadelphia 2 years ago, but that is privatized now (charging $1200 a month rent That's more than the BAH rate for an E-5 with dependents). There are TONS of little itty-bitty towns/villages to search but I doubt even the lifelong residents know them all. =) Harrisville, Diana, Great Bend, Denmark, and Copenhagen are the ones that come to mind right now because they are the ones we pass through while driving from Lowville to Gouverneur, or from Lowville to Watertown or Fort Drum. I know I'm missing others. Evans Mills, Theresa, and Carthage are more popular areas because they are closer to Fort Drum. Honestly, it is usually best to buy up here. The rent is getting ridiculous simply because the places know that someone will be desperate enough to pay it. I was fortunate to find a reasonable place in Lowville, 3 bedrooms for $725. We just bought a place in Gouverneur and even after rolling our closing costs into the loan the mortgage payment is $793. That's for a 5 bedroom, nearly 2400 square foot house. House prices are going up but they are not bad yet so it is an ideal time. If you are set on renting, Craigslist is the best search tool that I found while searching from VA while my husband was deployed.

One thing to keep in mind, Theresa is on a different power grid, so their electricity is MUCH MUCH cheaper then National grid, I am talking 200 dollars a month cheaper. So if your money is really in a pinch you should look into renting in Theresa or buying there.

School information
I have a 12 year old that will be going into 7th grade by the time we get to Ft Drum. I am looking for information on the best school district within 25 miles of Post. Would anyone know the local rankings.

I also don't mean to butt in here but I must say Watertown is a very nice town if you give it a chance. Watertown is like any other Northeastern city in terms of architecture and climate. Most of the downtown buildings are old and rundown and we have cold winters. If you want to make friends with the locals don't make fun of their town. The most annoying thing for anyone to hear is, "Man, this place sucks"! I've been here since November and I'm already sick of hearing soldiers whine about Ft. Drum. When I ask them where they are from they usually end up telling me someplace lame like Oklahoma or Kansas anyway. Don't let my name fool you, although I was born and raised in NY I have lived in every corner of the country and can say that Watertown is not as bad as most of the places I've been to! One thing I've noticed is that the majority of soldiers want chain restaraunts like Olive Garden to come to town. Others like me think Olive Garden is a disgusting psuedo-Italian rip off not worth the salad and bread sticks. Because of the Italian-Americans who immigrated here we actually have decent Italian places...Art's Jug and Sbarro's are nice places. If you have to live off the economy it's a struggle to get established in Watertown. Unlike downstate New York jobs pay very little in this region and good jobs are hard to come by.

Looking for home to rent in Watertown area
I'm new to this site so I hope I'm posting this in the right place.
First of all let me start out by saying that I'm trying to help out my brother and sister-in-law. Since she recently got a job in Watertown (she works at Stream I believe) they've been looking for a place. They need help taking care of my 6 month old niece. My parents said they'd be willing to move in and help. However, my boyfriend and I are living with my parents at the moment. My boyfriend only has a part time job and I'm still looking. I thought that if we moved with them, my boyfriend could help with rent as well.
So essentially, we're looking for a place to rent with at least 4 bedrooms and 2 baths and is pet friendly.
We want to move in asap. I'm not 100% sure about pricing.
