Well, I live in Florida, originally from Wisconsin. I've lived here 28 years, this is maybe why people move back.
When you walk outside, it litterally feels like you step into a sauna, there's no use doing your hair, makeup or putting clothes on, you end up dripping by the time you get to your car,it's GROSS!!
The people are very self absorbed, and down right stuck up, not friendly AT ALL!!!
There is NOTHING to do here, just the beach and no one even goes in the water anymore after watching too much shark week, lol! It's BORING, FLAT, FAKE, and yes we have Disney ,but for $80 bucks a pop, it's not like you can go that much if at all depending how big your family is.
It's not very diverse so depending on where you live, prepare yourself for that too.
Up north is beautiful, you've got 4 seasons, mountains, lakes, parks, lot's to do, friendlier more helpful people, and it doesn't feel like you live on the sun!!Trust me stay where you are, my family is coming up to New York next year and it can't come fast enough!!!

We moved to eastern Tennessee from upstate NY in August 1994. We were pleasantly surprised at the cost of living here vs. NY. The property taxes and utility rates are much lower. At that time, there were plenty of jobs to go around, but all that has changed with the recession. We're just trying to keep the jobs we have and wait it out until we retire in a couple of years.

It was lonely here at first, but since that time we've made some close friends. One if from Ohio, one from Michigan, and most are native Tennesseans. It's all in how you treat people.

Most people are very friendly, but you have some idiots who are still fighting the Civil War. There are idiots everywhere, though. Just don't move here then try to change things to the way they were "back home". The native won't like it or you! They'll tell you to go back where you came from. The same applies everywhere. When I lived in upstate, we had people from downstate move there and try to make things the way it was downstate. It never works and people will not take it lightly.

We miss our family, but they like to come down here to visit us, too. We keep in touch by phone and email, but it's just not the same as dropping in for a short visit.

Unhappy Wanna go back up North!!

My husband and I ( we are both in our late 30's) have been living in the Jacksonville/St Augustine FL area now for 7 years. I am ready to move back to Rochester NY. He is not so convinced yet, as he is not a fan of the long winters. I am ready to deal with it again for a better quality of life in other ways. We moved here mostly for the weather, and now I feel it was the WRONG decision. I have really tried to like it here, and there are things I do like....but the things I don't are out ranking the positive right now.

People down here are not open to new friendships, for the most part. We have met friends, but they are all from other places like Boston, NYC, NJ, PA, and OH....not FL natives. Also, people tend to move around a lot. You make friends, then a year later they move someplace else. People here are friendly, they will say "hello" in stores or strike up small talk, but when it comes to true friendship it is really hard to find and crack the circles they already have. We don't have kids (no plans to) and choose not to follow an organized religion. Most people here meet friends via church or through their children and their friends.

We are not too far from family, my parents are about 2.5 hrs away, they retired to FL. But we work all week then when it comes to the weekend plans going there isn't always an option. I would love to be back where we have more family and our old friends back.

The whole "North" vs "South" garbage is still an issue here too. Sometimes when you open your mouth you will get the " You are not from around here are you?" Then you are given attitude from it. People drive around with confederate flags on their cars, and in some parts of town flags fly on their front lawns. It amazes me that people have not let the Civil War go!!

This Summer has been a record breaker as of today, and I am going stir crazy!! Over 45 days of over 90 degrees and its humid as heck! I can't even go outside to tend to my flowers or I break out in hives from the heat. There are only so many movies to see, ways to clean the house, times to hit the pool...and I find it way too hot to sit on the beach (even under an umbrella)...etc. I am an outdoors person, for me to be cooped up inside this long is not good.

I am back in school part time right now while working full time, when I am done in about 2 years, we are out of here!!

Default Oppressive summer vs. Cold, snowy winter

I've just returned from the Charleston area after spending a week with my parents. (They moved down there 20+ years ago from northern NJ.) Granted, this year's high temps and humidity are exceptional.

But my conclusion in comparing north - south is that while winters in the northeast can be cold and snowy, you have the option of going out if you're willing to put on layers. (Yeah L L Bean!) Whereas, last week I found the heat and humidity of Mt Pleasant absolutely unbearable. There was no comfortable time in daylight to take a walk or sit outside. I felt contained all week -- within a home, car and various buildings. Ugh!

My immediately family as well as my DH's family are all in NC / SC / FL. All would like us to move south. DH has lived there before and is in no hurry to go back. And I know I would be miserable. My C-D name says it all -- we looking for a little place further north and keep our condo in NY state.

We move back because we realize a few things...no jobs are to be found at decent wages, the schools are absolutely sucktacular, you spend your entire summer INDOORS because of the humidity and heat, there is absolutely nothing to do when you live near a beach unless you want to do tourist stuff and spend oodles of money you don't have. Well, that sums up MY reasons at least Sadly, hubby loves it here, mostly because he's away from his family lol

Shortly after we moved here, we invested in a swimming pool at home. The nearest public pool was 20 miles away and closed at 5 PM. Crazy, huh? We've spent many enjoyable days in our pool with family and friends. The only way I can barbeque anything is to be wet first! LOL

We've learned to cope. I can adapt to the heat better than the cold. I once went to a skin specialist up north for my hives and he told me the bitter cold weather can help bring them on. So, I was actually allergic to below zero temps.

Winter is coming on and I have electric heat. This is actually a better time of year for our power bills. The central air costs a lot of money.

I've found, if you don't have any friends here, you can't love the south. Be very careful who you make friends with. It was a slow process, but now we have some wonderful people we spend our spare time with and they've been a Godsend to us when my mother was very ill.

The South is well....low hanging fruit. Long Island has become just a horrible expensive parody of its former self....but most of these New South towns get old fast. Was in Charlotte and Raleigh for work last month and was just amused at all the hype these towns had. I realized that most of it was merely economics. Most everything else is (just mho)...just a great swath of mediocrity. Kind of like Vegas and Phoenix. I'll take New England, Lake Ontario, easy access to Montreal, and a couple months of cold. At least i can go skiing in the cold...in the south the summers mean ac, shopping malls, and being indoors. No thank you.
