Question Moving from WI to Marcy, NY...

My husband and I are seriously considering moving from WI to near Marcy and are just looking for a little input. First of all, I can't even find a city website for Marcy but it doesn't seem that small. Is living affordable there? He would be transferring with his current job with Wal-Mart as a Diesel Mechanic and the pay is pretty good. Also curious about the school systems and such.

And input would be much appreciated! Thanks!

Samara

Marcy is in between Utica and Rome... I have not been to Marcy specifically .. but really these areas are all close enough together you could really live anywhere nearby there. The population in the area has declined and traffic really isnt an issue. From Marcy it'd be like a 10 minute drive to either Utica or Rome. (if you cant find anything on Marcy, look up stuff about Utica, cause thats the city there, maybe visit the place and see how it is)

(Ill be going to the college there SUNYIT soon)

The things to keep in mind I guess is that that whole Mohawk Valley region is very economically depressed like a lot of Upstate NY. The taxes tend to be very high but this is offset by a very low cost of living. Houses can be bought pretty cheap. $100k and down pretty much. Not the place to go for high tech or anything like that. If your husband has a decent job it should work out just fine.. It can be a nice place to live, depending on what you are looking for.

Also - very heavy snowfalls in the region. Its like Syracuse , which gets more snow than Buffalo, About 10' a year. But then, because of that, they are pretty well prepared for this, people drive and go to work and school etc.

Default Utica (marcy) is a great place!

Hi there- I would encourage you to come here to this area (referred to as the Mohawk Valley by locals). As the past chairperson of Genesis Young Professionals, I have to say that Utica and Rome have a lot going for them. I have a friend whose husband works at the Wal-Mart distribution center, I could even get you in touch with them. The area HAS been through an economically depressed time, but it is on the upswing now! There are TONS of great places to eat, Utica is one of the most diverse cities in the country, believe it or not, and Marcy is a nice suburb if you want to live about 10-15 minutes from all sorts of things in the region.
Check out www.thepulse.com for local restaurant, entertainment, bars, etc. (don't mind the forum there- local regulars on the site tend to get a bit bawdy)
or www.cityofutica.com where there's a pretty decent amount of info. Feel free to email me at danasaylor at hotmail dot com for any other info you'd like.

It's a nice town in the Whitesboro School District. There is are a couple prisons and a mental hospital/facility, but it's not like you hear anything coming from either place. It is in between Utica and Rome. Here are some websites you might like to look at: Central New York Jobs
