Cool thread! It sounds like the Hill in Scranton is similar to Syracuse's East Side(from around University Hill to the DeWitt/city line south of East Genesee Street) or other city neighborhoods(SE Rochester, North Buffalo, SW Albany, etc.)with a Jewish concentration or at least historically speaking. Syracuse University is known for having a high percentage of students of a Jewish background(about 20-25%) and a few blocks from campus is the 9th oldest synagogue/temple in the country and a Chabad House. There are a couple of congregations just within the town of DeWitt. Actually, Dolph Schayes, a former NBA player with the Syracuse Nationals and arguably the best Jewish Basketball player ever, lives in DeWitt. His son, Danny, was an 18 year NBA pro.
I also believe that comedian Jeff Altman, a native that grew up on the East Side and graduated from Nottingham High, is also Jewish.
The JCC is also in DeWitt, which is also where the Syracuse Hebrew Day School is located and Charney's, a long time Men's clothing store in the area, is owned by a Jewish family with locations in DeWitt and Clay.
If I'm not mistaken, Jewish families, if they don't put their children in public schools or the Hebrew Day School(K-6), may go with private Pre K-12 school Manlius-Pebble Hill or even nearby Catholic options(Holy Cross(Pre K-6) or Christian Brothers Academy (7-12).
Here is a school in the Syracuse area that I have never heard of until today: EPSTEIN HIGH SCHOOL OF JEWISH STUDIES - Home It is affiliated with Temple Concord, which is the 9th oldest Jewish congregation in the country(1839) and is near Syracuse University.
OP, the Albany area has a significant percentage of Jewish population for the Upstate area, probably at least 5% of the total population compared to < 2% elsewhere. Unfortunately, I haven't lived in the Albany area in many years.

Rochester has quite a bit, especially in Brighton, the SE Quadrant of the city and Pittsford. In the Syracuse area, most are concentrated in DeWitt(J-D school district), the Fayetteville-Manlius area and the East Side of the city. Vestal/Binghamton's West Side, New Hartford/South Utica and Ithaca are other areas that come to mind.
SUNY-Oswego, Binghamton University, UAlbany, UB(University of Buffalo), Cornell, Syracuse, University of Rochester, Ithaca College and Skidmore are Upstate NY colleges and universities with high Jewish student populations: 2015 Top 60 Schools by Jewish Student Population
