If you could move anywhere in NY (not LI) where would you move? (New York: how much, new house)

I suppose Albany area. Saratoga would be ideal, but 30K won't go very far there. Some Albany burbs would offer you quick access to Saratoga/Adirondacks region and a quick weekend shot into NYC if needed.

Hudson Valley would also be a good choice, but it is far costlier than true upstate areas such as Albany.

I think I'd try a two-home strategy, at least after retirement. The main or "winter" place would be a condo in the Capital District, perhaps in the Saratoga area. This would be close to town and bus routes, etc. The 2nd or "summer" place would be up in the Catskills. Eventually, the 2nd home would be sold, and I'd live in the condo until I have to move into an assisted living facility or nursing home.

Note: I'm starting to look for the 2nd home now, and might move from Rhinebeck to the Capital District in several years, after I retire.

I suppose I should add : if I had to choose a cheaper place I guess I'd pick the westernmost Catskills or nearby central NY.

Definitely the Hudson Valley gets my vote. Tivoli is great, Germantown, Red Hook, Valatie and Kinderhook are all great towns that all have their own personalities.

Skaneatelesmon, what a great suggestion. That is exactly the way to approach it. I am in real estate and see people move to my area every day (I'm not IN Ny anymore, I miss it at times!)--it is interesting and amazing the way people pick up and leave everything to start over in a new place, or they move their entire family for a job transfer. Exciting, but scary! There's a lot to consider about what you want out of life--whether you are a city person or not.

I live in Elmira and would also like to live in BInghamton. They have hundreds of things in common. I like this area (the Southern Tier) because of the small cities and the landscape. The Chemung and Susquehanna Rivers, the hills all around and being very close to the Finger Lakes makes it the perfect place for me.
