I travel for work, have lived all over NY state....
and my favorite place is Rochester. It's got everything you could want from a big city, with the not-scary feel of a smaller town. It has TONS of art, museums, sports... the outdoor recreation is AMAZING (those PARKS!! Highland and Cobb Hill and the canal in Pittsford and the little family parks in Fairport... and all the paths for biking or blading or walking along the Erie canal)... as well as tons and tons of shopping, some fanTAStic restaurants of all ethnicities, the beautiful little neighborhoods of old, gorgeous historic homes on wide, landscaped boulevards that remind me of the pretty parts of L.A. ... and did I even mention that it borders Lake Ontario and has a great sandy beach (with full amenities, playground, eating establishments, etc). (I actually lived in Roch for months and was already totally in love with it before even setting foot on the lake... I couldn't believe I could love that city more, but that easily did it!) To me (and others I've met, too, who have told me they feel the same way), Roch has something "magical" about it. It's hard to describe, but I get such a good feeling from the place... it's a mix of culture, growth, and pride of the people and their city. It is very progressive in many areas. Check their website and see what I mean. Oh yeah-- it also has one of the best standards of living in the state-- money goes a long way there, and houses are surprisingly affordable. (Go to any of the realty sites like realtor.com or remax.com, search in 2 of the closest-to-downtown but safe family suburbs-- 5 mins from downtown Roch-- of Greece or Irondequoit, and see.) I currently live in N. Syracuse, which I like, but I miss Rochester still, and my boyfriend and I have been known to make the 70-minute drive just to hit one of our beloved restaurants. (By the way, I can tell you which NY towns/cities to definitely avoid, which is another long post altogether, if you're interested.)
Hope this helps, and good luck!

I wouldn't call Greater Rochester "magical" but it has had the most suburban growth out of the big four Upstate Metros (Buffalo, Rochester, Syracuse and Albany). All that recent growth has created a more positive, progress mind-set and the built environment is much more "new", which in turn makes the area look more "clean cut" and upscale.
Kodak and the other big companies in Rochester have done decades of philanthropy and that's why there are some things that Rochester has that the other Upstate cities lack.
Since 1980, the Rochester suburbs have grown the most in comparison to the other Upstate metros. Some rough stats:
Total Residential Building Permits 1980-2006
Rochester MSA ~ roughly 86,000
Albany MSA ~ roughly 83,000
Buffalo MSA ~ roughly 70,000
Syracuse MSA ~ roughly 50,000
I know what tup66 means though. It's partly from my visits to suburban Rochester and other cities that I realize how much potential the Syracuse area has if it could just start really growing!

geneseo NY
i have found more info about geneseo NY click this link:
Where the singles are - Geneseo, New York (10) - Money Magazine
also click this link:
MONEY Magazine: Best places to live 2007: Geneseo, NY snapshot
PS: the first web site probably makes people think that geneseo is only a good place for singles and not families but belive me geneseo is still a great place for families.
PS the second web site says the high temperature in July is 50 degrees. that is false. the hottest it usually gets in July is usually 95 degrees. that is very hot for here.

Anywhere in Columbia County, other than Hudson. I had the pleasure of mapping the roads in this county about 7 years ago, (as well as about 20 other NY counties) and this was my favorite place. Someone else mentioned Cooperstown, and I think that too, is a great choice. I also like northern Tompkins County (Ithaca).
