If you could move anywhere in NY (not LI) where would you move?
Still reaching towns to move to with my 7 yo son. No longer restricted by distance/work. Income is approx 30k before taxes.

Currently live there and love it, but no longer can afford it (make to little to afford Nassau and too much for any assistance!!!). Tired of renting, anyway. Have the moving bug and can go pretty much anywhere in NY, so just curious about other places outside of the Island.

I don't know what the housing prices are in the area but my favorite place in New York is Saratoga Springs. It has a wonderful small town feel and it's a little different from the NYC area in most ways.

Saratoga Springs is "expensive", for Upstate NY standards, but definitely more affordable than Long Island. You can still get a very decent house there in the $200k range.

I'd have to go with Saratoga too. Quick commute to Albany, and the beauty of the Lake George area. Lots to do for youngsters.

Central NY has the best bang for your buck, lovely lakes and parks. But very snowy windy winters!

If I had ****-loads of money, I'd live in Manhattan -- no brainer.
But since I don't, I'd pick the Hudson Valley region, somewhere between West Point and Saratoga -- not that that's necessarily a "cheap" area, but some areas are affordable and nice, and you can get to lots of neat places (Adirondacks, Montreal, NY, Boston, VT, Berkshires . . . ) fairly easily.

Decide first what you like to do. Do you love the outdoors or do you prefer to be nearer to a city? Do you like snow, or just tolerate it. How about a small town feel? Would it bother you that everyone knows everyone? Do you need a good source of city culture nearby? How about an airport? Do you like the atmosphere of a college town, or would that drive you nuts? In a way, I have described so many different towns/cities here. You just need to let us know what is important to you and then you'll get lots of suggestions.

I would like Oswego or Ithaca, but we will probably end up moving to Rochester instead.
