I am retiring soon and want to leave Queens. I want to be within a train's ride to NY in order to be able to come in and enjoy all the city has to offer, and possibly work a couple of days.
I want to move to a town with a walkable Main Street and nice areas to hike and ride my bicycle.
I am looking to pay aobut $400 K for a small house or condo, and don't want to be stuck with Westchester property taxes. Any suggestions?
Look possibly into New Paltz, Rhinebeck, Red Hook, Beacon, Kingston and Saugerties. if you mind Rockland County, look into Nyack or Suffer too. Here's a good site to find out how walkable a community is: Get Your Walk Score - A Walkability Score For Any Address
new paltz saugerties, beacon and all those areas are atleast 2 hours door to door commute to manhattan. nyack and suffern are good, peekskill, mohegan, , town of haverstraw, stony point, are for the most part nice affordable areas.
