Trying to move back home (New York, Buffalo: relocation, jobs, hospitals)

I need some advice. My wife, daughter and myself have been living in Raleigh, NC for 7 years now. I've been trying to move back home for some time now and I know I have the experience, I just don't get the interview. Is it because my resume says NC and the company isn't offering relocation? Can I put my parents address down and try to get myself in the door that way or is that too much like lying? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

From what I understand...the job market is somewhat difficult right now. Just keep plugging away is my suggestion.

Where exactly are you trying to go back to? I'm originally from Rochester and have been in Wake County for 12 years now (Apex right now); and also looking forward to moving back to NY within the next few months. I'm self employed so finding a job isn't as much of an issue for me, but I defintiely understand your wanting to go home after living in this very "un-homey" area for so many years.

I'm from Syracuse, my wife is from Utica. I've applied to a few job in Rochester with Verzion Wireless in Network Operations. I used to live Apex, now we live in Holly Springs - a little more land. This area wasn't so bad 7 years ago but now the traffic, developments, everything is getting way out of control.

If you are trying to get a job in NY and you live in NC, you need to use a NY address. You would get more responses. I currently live in NY and had my house built in Raleigh, NC. I will be moving in 2 weeks. Do you guys not like NC? Were there any bad exoeriences? I am hoping my family and I like it. I do see that it is very hard to find a job with Wake Coutny and the hospitals. I wish they had city test like here, I think your chances are better?

Don’t use a New York address.

In the first paragraph of your cover letter, mention that you are relocating to Central New York. The message and impression you want to create and convey is that you are returning home regardless of your job prospects.

Using a different address is dishonest and in a tight job market, HR managers get flooded with applicants and will have to weed most of them out. Don’t get weeded out because your resume looks a little fishy.

Using a different address could easily come back to bite you in the rear, during the interview process or even after you are hired but still on a probationary period.

You wrote that you are in network operations? If anything, being here in the Triangle should *help* your cause – this area is well-known for skilled hi-tech labor.

I'm new to blogging because I'm so much older than everyone else! But I think we have something in common, in that my husband and I are beginning to revisit ideas of moving back to Western New York, having been here in Denver (he has federal job) for 2 years. There are grown children and grandkids in Williamsville, Lockport, LeRoy and Buffalo. We own a home here and will need to look in those areas for a house and jobs, even though we are getting fairly close to retirement age -- if there IS such an animal...okay, so that's about it for my first blogging experience...thanks for playing...

I don't think your NC address has anything to do with relocation costs.They say they do not pay for relocation maybe they do not need help in your field.

I work in HR and a lot of times we do not even give a resume a second glance if it's not a local address. This is due to the fact that we've been burned several times - i.e. people say they are relocating and change their mind, etc. I would suggest using a NY address and taking it from there. My $0.02.
