Default Unadilla?

Pros? Cons? Esp. in terms of raising a young family. Peace and quiet is more than fine with us if it isn't a function of decline and depression. A good family town with Upstate's famous merits (quaint neighborhoods, decent schools, community feeling, close to swimming/fishing, etc.) is what we're after.

Also, how close/far is Unadilla to Cooperstown & Oneonta?

Any if-you-can't-afford-Cooperstown-but-love-that-type-of-town alternatives you could suggest?

Thanks!

We live in Unadilla (at least that is what our mailing address is- technically we're in Sidney)- less than a mile from town 'as the crow flies,' but 3-4 miles 'as the car drives.' We don't have any kids (yet) and when we do we'll likely homeschool, so while I can't comment on the schools (and with the homeschooling plan don't care that much), if you want to raise your kids in a classic rural setting Unadilla could fit the bill. The town is attractive, particularly this time of year, but there really isn't much going on- it did suffer significant flooding last year, but for the most part has recovered (though if you look at houses in town take a good hard look at the basements!). A bank, a second-rate Great American grocery store, a couple gas station/convenience stores, pizza parlor, a bar.... But it has the advantage of being on Rt. 7 and direct access to 88. Sidney is a couple miles to the west and while much less attractive has more 'going on'- a Price Chopper, Great American, TWO pizza parlors, hardware stores, etc. Oneonta is about 20-30 minutes from Unadilla, depending on whether you take 88 or rt 7. As far as geography, the general Unadilla/Sidney area is quite beautiful.

Too tired tonight to try and answer any further (lots of outdoor work this weekend).

God, you're all over the state. Check out Glens Falls. I don't know a lot about it but found it interesting on the drive through. Plattsburg isn't far from Burlington, Vt, and was cute.

If you want small and near the 1000 Islands there's Clayton, or you can just come here and I'll show you around.

Jamescf is on a distinguished road
I like Unadilla. The school district has a good acedemic rating. It does not have the amenities that a lot of bigger schools have like a pool. It is a quiet, safe place to raise kids provided you plan to RAISE them. There is not much for kids to do in Unadilla so if you let them run amok in their teen years as some parents here do, they can get into trouble as some kids here do. The key is to keep them home when they are not involved in school activities and engage them and their friends in family activities. Let's face it, everything but the bar closes by 10 PM. What do these parents think their kids are up to? Except for maybe the skateboarders and a few hardcore jocks on the b-ball court, they are hanging out behind the U. Diner getting stoned.
