I miss my beloved Western New York!!! (Rochester, Canandaigua: homes, rent)

I moved from my beloved state of New York to Florida almost 25 years ago.
We are flying into Rochester in July, meeting up with some of my remaining
family and are going to Trumansburg where we rented a cabin on the Lake.
Reminiscing about old times and childhood memories after viewing some
scenic pics of upstate New York in all its seasons made me miss my home
state all the more. I know that my life is in Florida now and I often think
of just picking up and moving back, but I married a native Floridian and he
starts hunting around for thermal underwear if it gets below 50 degrees so
a winter up there would be pure torture for him. I grew up in a little itsy
bitsy town called Kuckville which is right on Lake Ontario, and I'll never forget
the blizzard of 77. Anyway, I wish that the people here that complained about the New Yorkers living here could have just one inkling of the culture,
beautiful surroundings and the kindness of the western New Yorkers. I've
traveled all over the US and many countries outside the US, and I can truly
say that Upstate New York probably one of the most beautiful areas in
the US.

I CAN NOT BELIEVE YOU JUST SAID YOU LIVED IN KUCKVILLE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !! My family owned a cottage on the lake there, on Harwyn Shore Road, for almost 50 years! My parents had to sell it a few years ago and we are in NC (for now but not for long, looking to move back to Rochester very soon) so I haven't seen it in years. Some of my best childhood memories took place in Kuckville. It's not even on the map!

Well, it's hard to believe the coincidence of someone actually knowing that
area. We lived right on Johnson's creek.
Some of my neighbor's were the Seeple's, Reimers, Moran's, O'Donnells, and
the Leigh's. At the end of the road we lived on I just discovered a State
Park is there now. You're right, some of my most cherished memories were
growing up there, jumping off johnson's crick bridge, my father and aunt
inherited a cottage just a stones throw away on the Lake but sold it when
we relocated to Florida. Wish we still had it, I'd be up there all summer.
I went to Lyndonville Elementary and Junior High then we moved into Albion.
My husband and I want to move from Florida, and not because we don't like
it here, we do, but I'm just sooooooo ready for a change. My son Jack is starting Kindergarten this August, so it will be sometime before we move, we
just don't know where because we are avid fishers and that is what we enjoy
most and living right near the beach makes it a difficult decision. It's a small
world. Do you remember the little convenient store called Townsend's?

fishingirl, I understand completely. We moved to Georgia 20 years ago from Western NY and maybe I remember it in my mind's eye, but New York just seemed so much nicer than Georgia is. I'll take a few blizzards over this humidity and 102 degree heat anyday! NY is beautiful -- Georgia is flat and sandy. Did I mention HOT?! My husband was born and raised in South GA, but we're going up for a visit this summer so he can see the great place I grew up. We're renting on a Conesus Lake and taking a charter onto Lake Ontario, maybe I can at least get him up there more often by bribing him with some fish!!

I've been surfing the forum's this morning because I'm getting so excited about visiting again. It's been a whole decade since my last visit!!!! We're
staying on Lake Cayuga so I think it's going to be great fun. We'll be getting some fishing in as well, but I'm not great at freshwater and I can only remember certain fish like the sun, salmon, trout and pike. I know what you mean when you say it's hot. Hot in the south like Georgia and Florida should have it's own vocabulary meaning, like towns and cities here should be named, Cayenne, Jalapeno, Habanero, Red Hot Chili Springs, things like that so people can catch the real drift of Southern Heat. There are so many beautiful things that I do love about Florida but like I said before, I think people yearn for changes after staying in one place so long. I'm not sure it will ever be a possibility for us to move up there, but maybe we will luck out and find a nice little cottage to buy one day. Today it's in the 90's here. Can't wait for July and August, that oughta be a real treat!!! Well, I have
to go for now, I'm busy getting my hurricane preparations in order HAH HAH

We were the Tremaine's.....we were out there every weekend from May to September from the 50's (I wasn't born until the 60's though. so I missed out on the first several years) to the late 90's, 3 generations got to enjoy that cottage. Townsends...I think that might be the little store I would walk to and get candy...not sure.

The sunset picture on the Albion page is taken from a kayak on Johnson's Creek looking out onto Lake Ontario. A log with seagulls sits on the infamous sandbar!

My son took the picture...it is testimony to the fact that there are the most beautiful sunsets in the world at Lakeside and Sunset Beach.

I spent summer's at the Church cottage in the 70's. We continue the tradition of the fourth of July boat parade. In fact, we had the best Pirate parade with a water fight at the bridge!

Townsend's is now the Creekside Store and it is the best place to buy penny candy around. They have a small grocery and hardware section and now make pizza and subs.

You would be happy to hear that it is still a wonderful, fun place to be!

You can not beat the area Finger Lakes/Adirondack Mts for pure beauty and it seems many of the homesick NYers mention those areas....go figure!

One spectacular drive (especially for Alwaysanewyorke who is working on hubbie ) is through the Adirondack Park up to Lake Champlain.....(Old Forge, Saranac, Lake Placid is a favorite route of ours) you will have traveled some of the most spectacular countryside in the East.....we continue across Champlain to Burlington VT and down to Boston and it is, again, bucolic in all senses of the word....going the middle of August

For closer to Rochester (Conesus Lake), take hubbie on a wine tour through Canandaigua, Kueka, Cayuga on onward...
