Possible Move to Ithaca for Grad School (New York, York: for sale, real estate) - City-Data Forum

I am applying to a few schools for grad school including NYU, Johns Hopkins and Cornell. I am married with a family of 4. The programs are full time programs so I may be working part-time in the form of internships. The programs range anywhere from 1 year to 2 years.

For Cornell, where are some safe areas to live near the campus? I have elementary school considerations, so good schools are a major factor. Any specific apartment complexes (or other forms of housing options) names would be helpful. Thanks so much for any feedback.

I'm not sure if there are apartments in this area, but maybe the Belle Sherman area would work. There is a very good elementary school of the same name in the neighborhood too.

You could check websites like Mapskrieg, GreatSchools - Public and Private School Ratings, Reviews and Parent Community and the NYSED Report Cards site for further information.

The area around Belle Sherman would be a great option--as ckh says, there are not a ton of apartment options there, but it's walkable to campus, and there may be a few duplexes or something along those lines. While it's close to campus, it's not a student neighborhood.

You may also want to look at the apartments up behind the Triphammer Mall--Gaslight, Warrenwood, University Park. I'm not positive that they have any places larger than 2br, but they're clean and quiet. I knew a number of 3-4 person families that lived in my complex when I lived there. Pretty much all the area schools are well-regarded, so you won't be in much trouble on that front. It's mostly grad students, postdocs, and young professionals in there, and there is a bus that goes straight to campus.

Lastly, you may want to look into the Hasbrouck apartments, which are Cornell-run apartments specifically for grad students with families. I'm not sure what elementary school children go to there, but it's a good and convenient option.
