How about higher education? How far from Ithaca or Binghampton or Oswego?
I grew up downstate (right outside NYC) and mostly got around to Hudson Valley, Catskills and Adirondacks. Western NY and the Southern Tier are like undiscovered country to me except for a couple of visits to Ithaca and Binghampton.
Most people here in New Mexico where I live now have zero knowlege of New York State. They have no idea how big it is of how much forested and rural land there is or the many nice small towns and cities.
I even knew a girl who introduced me to her friend like this:
"This is my friend ABQConvict, He's from New Jersey." I said, "No, not New Jersey, I'm from New York." and she said, "Oh, Isn't New York the capital of New Jersey?"

Nice photo tour
tviz,
I have to say very nice photo tour of your city/town.
I have always enjoyed the photo tours people give, for the advantage of seeing many beautiful homes For the different Architectural design.
Even seeing thru the camaras eye, the going ons of everyday life within the city. You did not waste your time at all imo.
Yes, I have seen some if not all of SWB photo tours and they are very nice ones. I see where he gets down sometimes with them, but many like them and give him support to keep doing them. imo take care

I'd check to make sure your kids aren't going to the same school as that person!

Horseheads is a suburb of Elmira if you want to call it that. They have many similarities because they are so close. The main difference is the population density. Elmira's house are closer in the city and Horseheads are more spread out because it is more rural.

You did a good job capturing the essence of Elmira in your photos. I live about 30-minutes away in Watkins Glen. I don't like Elmira at all. I've found that there really IS nothing going on even during the week. From fall to winter the college students take over everything, and in the summer it's just plain boring. The west side houses are really the only beautiful things IN Elmira. My husband and his family grew up there and before the mall was built in the late 80's early 90's, it was a BOOMING historical town! However, the commercial explosion that has happened in Big Flats, it's close neighbor, has really stopped people from having to ever see Elmira. I myself would never go there if my good friends didn't live there. There is ALOT of commercial space available in Elmira, and they are really working on creating incentives to get new businesses there to perk up the atmosphere, but until they find out a way to draw the public from the all-access mall and the commercial boom of the area around the airport, it's a VERY high risk to bring a business to downtown Elmira.

Its sad to see that you are just about the only one on here that didn't like Elmira and I have a few things I disagree with.
-What kinds of things are so interesting in Watkins Glen?
-How do the college kids take over Elmira when only 1,200 kids attend and Elmira has a population of 30,000?
-Almost all cities of Elmira's size have fairly large shopping centers like the Arnot Mall and other stores like Wal-Mart, Target, etc.
-There is a lot of open store fronts and there is a big push right now to fill them. A couple days ago the Riverside FLorists building started its renovation into a new place for businesses and high quality loft apartments. The more people who invest in downtown and open business, the more people will come.
