This is a collection of photos I made of Elmira, NY I made while riding around the city. I'm sure ScrantonWilkesBarre could do a better job but I threw this together quickly.
Please don't post any replys yet becuase I'm still trying to put the photos on. lol

I take it you were not able to get the photos up ? I was actually interested in seeing what the town looks like, I never been there. I did like the historical victorian house photos from the area someone linked to (it might have been you)

The individual houses and the surrounding country look really nice. Streetscapes and downtown photos look pretty desolate, but I suspect that's cause you took them on Sunday morning -- are things more "lively" during the week?

Looks a lot like Roanoke Virginia. Just smaller that's all. Thanks for the tour. Very pretty small-city feel!
Nice job!

Things are more active on weekdays. Only about 1/3 of the buildings have stores, restaurants, or businesses in them so Elmira has tons of potential. Many people say and I agree myself that Elmira's downtown and population are coming back. Right now it is about 30,000 people and with the surrounding towns about 90,000.
SO what does everybody think about the photos?

I'm glad I spent all this time making this photo tour and only two people had something to say about it. (Thank you for that) Maybe I just won't do another one like ScrantonWIlkesBarre said he would do.

I like that first house, the English country manor the best. It's too bad the commercial sector is so weak (30% is not good).
I hope things are looking up, though. It looks like a very nice area. What kind of employment is there around there? Also, is that low water in the river or does it commonly have more flow?

I appreciate the photos, mainly cause I've never been there before and its interesting seeing other towns.... but at the same time you have to keep in mind, Elmira is a small town that aint exactly on everyones radar. In fact Id guess that most people don't even know where it is. ESP. if they arnt living in Upstate NY. Downstate theyd have no clue what your talking about, let alone outside NYS.
Its not like like you have that much to complain about.. I live in a metro area of 1.2 million people and you'd be surprised at how few people understand quite where Buffalo is... Internationally, people think we are right next to NYC somewhere, and even nationally, in the U.S., people think we are on the Alaska/New York state border somwhere up next to Greenland and the Yukon . Major league sports teams (that we are in danger of losing BTW) is all thats keeping us on the map at all.

To answer some questions, the water is pretty low right now. If you look at the Google satelitte view of Elmira you will see the water at an even lower point. Some jobs in the area include but are certainly not limited to are Corning Inc. (glass), Schweizer Aircraft (aircraft like helicopters and other planes), Synthes (makes parts for broken bones like new joints etc.), factories like Hilliard Inc., Hardinge Inc., Emhart Glass, Anchor glass, and of course the two prisons, Elmira Correctional Facility (northside), and Southport Correctional Facility (southside). Just keep posting if you have any other questions.
