If I remember correctly, the cylinder head has to come off to get the timing cover off. Don't think the chain can be done without pulling the head anyway.
Also, if the chain broke, chances are it was one of the guides or tensioners that let go first. That means parts and pieces went to the oil pan.
With all this going on, if it was me and I decided to fix the original engine, it would come out and go on a stand for the repairs. There are no gaskets for the timing cover or oil pan, just a high temp sealer. There's just too much of a chance for an oil leak trying to re-assemble it in the car.
With the engine on a stand, the lower end can be checked and a decision made whether to fix or replace.
With this being an interference engine (right?) I guess the head is coming off to replace at least some of the valves. At that point a used head from a boneyard might make more sense than putting new valves in the existing head.
If this job pretty well calls for pulling the engine, a reconditioned or boneyard engine with at least a new timing chain in it is looking better all along.
A reply to "Retriever" In the case of the chain failure posted by "JBPisgah" not all chain failures in the ka24de engines are a cause by a lack of lubrication, there is the case of the timing chain guide at the top of the engine breaking off and falling into the engine. If your lucky it passes as falls out of the way of the moving parts ,chains ,crank and sprockets. The failures I've have examined with a broken chain were a direct cause of the guide breaking off and falling between the sprocket of crank and the the lower timing chain. This guide was later identified as problem part by Nissan was being removed from all the KA24 series
engines because of that problem. So if you hear something that sounds like "ting" sound and your engine is not one of those that have had the guide removed, look in to have it it done before this kind of failure occurs.
