My battery light and break light stays on, on a 1999 Nissan Altima. I know this is the indication that there is a charging issue. The first thing I did was to run by Autozone and have the charging system checked, because I just replaced the alternator last November for the same issue. The alternator is cranking 14 volts at idle. I did smell a slight electrical smell, but have not been able to find anything that could be causing it. Everything on the vehicle is operating normally, lights, radio, wipers, heater/AC, and windows. Battery tested ok, as did the alternator, but there has got to be something causing this. I drove the car last night and the light was not on. I get I in it this morning to take my daughter to school, and bam the lights are on. I have been reading some of the posts in this forum for the same problem, but I am not able to come up with any solution. Could the alternator be causing the lights to stay on and still charge the battery? Somebody give me a clue, because I can't buy one....
It could be the alternator is going out. Sometimes working and sometimes not working. Check the battery with a multimeter. Google and youtube have plenty of posts on how to check alternators.
As for the brake light, that could be the ABS detecting a too low voltage to operate properly and it is "complaining". That would be if the brake light covers all brake issues and there is not a separate ABS light.
That's usually the warning sign for the alternator.
