I see alot of people trying to race others from a roll down the highway with these vehicles and tailgating others with them. I'd like to know more about how fast these cars are. Are they sleepers or something? I know that they were sleepers in the early 90s when they first came out as compared to alot of vehicles especially on the highway.
To be honest, Nissan Altima doesn't exactly scream Sports Sedan to me but the demographics of those generally driving them in my area seem to feel otherwise.
It was the Maxima that was the sleeper in the early/mid 90's, not the Altima. The first and second gen cars only came with a little I4 engine. It wasn't until the 3rd gen that you could actually get an Altima with a 3.5l V6, like 2003 or so. Those cars can do 0-60 in about 6 seconds.

I used to drive a classic Sentra SE-R in the early 90's and used to do stupid things when the road was emptier. I topped out my stock Sentra SE-R and a base Altima was right there with me. I left behind a mid 90's Maxima in the Sentra SE-R after a few mods.
How are the 3.5 Altima's from a roll? This is where I see folks going nuts, never from a dig.
Don't know, never had an Altima attempt something that stupid with me, and I've never owned one. A 6 sec 0-60 is decent for a plain jane sedan, and it's on par with some of the more powerful SUV's with V8's.
Their 4 banger version is capable of 0-60 in about 7 seconds and over 35 mpg hwy. in V6, 0-60 gets to about 6 seconds and still gets a little more than 30 mpg Hwy (your actual mileage may vary). Honda Accord and Toyota Camry are about in the same area.
The newer ones with CVT have annoying lag on take off. Had a rental last month and had to rev over 4000 RPM to get off a good speed.
But having said that, it is amazing how good new cars have gotten. The small Chevy (I guess Spark?) has a 0-60 time that is better than certain generation Toyota Celica's. But in today's market it is considered an underpowered basic A to B transportation.

I have Infiniti I30 97 now. I can't se how it can compare to Acura Legend that I had before it regard speed. Legend was very low to ground. In curve Infiniti tm Nissan Maxima do not hold well at all. Engine is strong, again no performance like Legend.
Today's 4 door sedans are considerably faster than sports cars for the 90's.
The V6 version of the Altima and Camry are down right fast. I'm not sure about the Altima but I saw a V6 Camry at the track running 14.0 at 99mph.
And even the 90s had drastic improvements over the 80s. I remember when fox body V8 Mustangs in the late 80s had 225hp and that was a big deal at the time.
Even a current full size GM pickup with a standard V6 engine has equal more hp than the old 350 v8s from back in the day.
