Even if it is common you have to look at your particular situation. Justifying what happened will not undo the consequences of your choice. I think you should write a letter of apology to the mother. Then move on. It's up to them if they want to reestablish a connection.

No, I have just been through so much harsh trauma in my years, that I realize nobody is perfect, and we all make mistakes and have regrets, so no fellow human ever deserves a bad vibe from me in any way.
