Eventually, I severed friendships that had a lot of "history" attached to them.

About 4 months ago, I severed the last of these friendships...a friendship that went back to 3rd grade. Why? Copying things I did (schooling), reverse snobbery, and becoming a rabid fundamentalist/Republican, when he doesn't have the demographics that go with that, but that's what his church dictates. His wife supports him and his children.

He unfriended me on FB because I was the dissenting voice on some of his posts. He would put up all these very patriotic Republican, anti-Obama posts on his wall. His fundie friends went into a feeding frenzy, supporting what he posted. I would insert some benign snide comments here and there. He wanted to keep the friendship alive via the phone and e-mail. No dice. I told him you unfriend me, then **** you. Should have booted him about 20 years ago. If you're mature, then you should realize your friends' political and religious views may not align with yours.

All the PITAs are now "history."

They say you can count your real friends on one hand and everyone else are acquaintances. Acquaintances you hear from once a year when you get a holiday greeting.

I stay friends with people I don't like when I am afraid that "breaking up" will hurt their feelings. To clarify, though, I mean by "not liking" that I just feel that we don't have much in common and/or they just irritate me in some way. (I am not certainly not a saint, though, as I do drastically reduce and limit our contact, in that case.) If I truly do not like someone because I have discovered that are mean or dishonest, then I just drop them without a second's thought.
