Most specifically, facebook...
Think about the following scenario. You fall out with a best friend over something. Best friend holds a lot of bad blood against you, maybe wants to 'get revenge' or 'make you pay'. They post a lot of slanderous things about you, tag/upload compromising photographs of you (which they could easily take/invade your privacy). Rightly or wrongly, a lot of people suddenly hate you.
With people spending so much time/putting so much of their life/private stuff online, isn't it just a dream for cyber-bullies and malicious people? I especially worry about teens.
Has this happened to your or anyone you know?
I had/have a friend who always took photos of me even when I told him I didn't want him too, and he would always upload them and tag me. It wasn't a huge deal, but some were embarrassing and I'd wish he'd asked before doing so. It's not a huge thing, but just imagine if someone had a vendetta against you.
These days some employers even look up your facebook, sometimes I wonder if it's better to just make my fb account private/delete it altogether, but I still want to have connections to all my friends and old classmates.
You really have to do some major weeding now and then, depending on how people treat you. I agree, someone can ruin your reputation on FB, much easier now than years ago...

It's not happening to me personally but I hear about it happening to teens and stuff. Cyber bullying and suicide. I'm sure it's blown up, but some teens are just addicted to fb and stuff so it follows.
My teenage son refuses to have a Facebook and Im glad. I'm happy I don't have that issue to contend with. He says a lot of kids at his school use it as means to cause problems. Personally I had an issue with a family member on my husband's side that is mentally ill.
I don't know if she stopped taking her meds but she flipped out on me one day. She was fairly new to Facebook, not very computer savvy. In her distorted mind, she thought it was a personal message to her. To this day I have no idea how she could have thought it was anything personal towards her, however she is mentally ill. She then started posting on her wall about how she wanted to kick my ass. Then of course her friends and family members wanted to know what was going on and so forth. She was making up all sorts of things. I was blown away at how nothing could turn into something. The experience really soured me to the whole Facebook thing. Of course I deleted this person and blocked her. She must be back on her meds because she doesn't recall the incident. I took a screen snapshot for my records, just in case the lunatic showed up at my house. What made it bad is at the time I had a few clients on my page (I did freelance work). I still have a FB account but I don't use it that much anymore. If I'm bored I took at it but rarely post anything. Too much of a liability.
Nothing like FB drama. Yawn. Why would any guy care about this type of nonsense and what others think of him? If you do, delete your account and move on.
I thought there was a way to prevent people from tagging you on facebook. I know that when people tagged me, I had to "share" the photo for others to see the tag. Maybe I don't know what I was doing.
I would say that dealing with facebook friends is no different than dealing with people outside of facebook.
But then perhaps my life is not scandalous enough for other people to hold against me.
I prefer to take social risks in areas where people find it normal even if annoying, e.g. being more independent from the crowd.
There is a report button, if they do it and facebook deems it a problem they will get their account banned
Those of you who think it's easy to get Facebook's attention to have accounts banned or pages removed, you might want to read this Salon magazine article. It's about a professional writer who found out that a pornographic Facebook page had been created in her name by people in another country who didn't even know who she was.
