FB is an invaluable tool for career networking, which is what I use it for. I've 'friended' other women aircraft mechanics and I'm a part of an association for women mechanics and pilots slo it's really nice to have someone to talk to if I'm having issues. They post a lot of job openings before they advertise them publicly as well.
I also have a lot of friends that travel all over the world and it's an easy way to keep in touch since many of them don't have phones, but do have access to Internet cafes.
I created a FB profile once only to get in touch with a former employer and dismantled it right after I made contact. I have no interest in social media, don't want anyone to "find" me or connect with old acquaintances. I figure, if I want to keep in touch I can call/email/text whatever. If I have lost touch, its usually intentional.
I am not a technophobe, I just don't see the point. Anyone have a similar POV? Or, am I missing something truly fantastic and I just don't get what that is?
No. It's a tool. There are many tools in the toolbox.
I didn't understand it, couldn't use it, and really don't want to know if your kid just did it's first poo in the potty.
I like visiting people. Old fashioned now. Back when I was a kid you used to go for morning or afternoon tea and a good yack, it's a shame it's died out.
Never have and never will. I see no point and it seems to be more of a juvenile popularity contest than anything... way too old and smart for that bull.
I've never gotten into the whole social media thing. I tried using Facebook once and I just didn't like it, or get into it.
My 12-year-old son and his friends are on social media and they've been trying to get me to adopt it for a couple of months now. I keep telling them that this old fool just can't get comfortable with all of this new technology!
It feels like a stale popularity contest. Half the time you're viewing pictures of long lost friends doing fabulous things. While I do enjoy seeing family and close friends doing cool things or pictures of their kids, those moments are too far and few between. That's why I disabled my account. Maybe I'm just more of an observer. I've just never felt the need to put all my business online, therefore I rarely posted all the wonderful things going on in my life. And in turn ended up looking at everyone else and thinking FAKEBOOK. While I do see benefits in connecting with people on facebook that you see on a regular basis in real life. I also feel it's not the only tool available.
+1. I still have an active account, but I don't check it very often.
