Yet some men keep insisting its true. There are a few on here that live in a really bizarre world. Maybe bizarro world, IDK.
Often someone at my lab will pick up lunch if they are going out or ask if you want them to bring you something back, but they dont pay for it. Its not a gender specific thing.

If I'm not romantically involved I don't pay. I don't pay for male friends so why pay for female friends?

I said ok, but asked him if a certain nicer place was good with him and he advised he didn't have the money. I said no problem, I did, and I told him I really really really wanted to pay. We went. On the way over I could feel he was undergoing a personality metamorphosis. I swear to you it was palpable! I felt I'd stepped directly into Frank Kafka's The Fly. LOL! We arrived, and oh my God, was he was TENSE! His niceness went directly out the window. He frowned a heck of a lot, objected to the menu, denigrated the restaurant, and all of a sudden nothing I said was right, funny, or good.
A woman has to be reeeally careful offering to pay for a guy. It could conceivably be the kiss of death.

I would be grateful for dating someone as nice as you, and offer to take you out someplace nice and pay next time. It's a shame he wasn't man enough (no pun intended) to get over his little insecurities.

Yes I haven't observed this either, in real life.

Unless I'm utterly confused, I don't quite think that's what we're discussing here. We're discussing people dating, people in relationships, and so on.
