how do I compliment to my friend's mom without sounding like an idiot? (friendship)

Nice guys are hard to find and a friend I met has always been good to me. I known him for awhile now. I know his mom somewhat. I like to compliment her how good of a friend he is to me without sounding lame? Any ideas?

I think you should be honest. Don't worry about being lame. Its his mother, she'll like hearing complaments or words of endearment about her son.
