I've only been on FB since around last Christmas, so I'm still learning its quirks.

As a person moves between pages, or on their timeline, a list saying "people you might know" shows up on the right.

Two questions:
1) Sometimes it's someone with a mutual friend, but why do they show up MORE OFTEN than others with whom I have mutual friends?
2) Sometimes there are NO mutual friends, so I open up their FB page - there is no alma mater in common, no geography in common, no likes in common (that I could detect), so who are these people?

Yes, thanks, I read that. But with mutual friends, why do some people show up MORE OFTEN in "People You Might Know" than other mutual friends who don't show up at all.

I don't think there's really a way for us to know that. As far as I know, it's just random. Honestly, I never pay attention all the FB crap on the sidebars.

Yea, that irritates me as well but I don't have an answer for why MOST of that crap on FB shows up. I noticed one this weekend...People You Might Know...it was my freaking sister. Yep, I know her alright but she is not my friend. Why on earth does it keep popping up? I'd like FB to get a clue!!

It may be there is some algorithm that determines this, such as . . . you go to that friend's page frequently, or they go to yours, and so anyone who is a friend of that person (and has some link to you - such as place of birth, high school, "likes" you have clicked on) starts popping up as someone you might know.

I don't pay any attention to those notifications.

I think if you and "person you might know" have many similiar friends, ten they pop up a lot more often there compared to one random person that one friend of yours knows.

I seem to notice the more 'mutual friends' we have, the more often those people show up as someone I may know.

Just tape a piece of paper over the sidebars.

I always click the X off suggested friends. I grow tired of seeing their stupid faces, lol.

The suggestions are based on the number of times you go to a friends page compared to the number of times the "suggested friend" goes to their page.

And... why would you go to some strangers FB page just because it was suggested to you?
