I'm not a techno-geek, but I do know how to read directions. I know how to find my own stuff all over the web ... how to find who, what, where, when, etc. .... Yes, employers, HR people, universities and others DO check FB and other sites ....
How would they know who is their employee when they don't use the internet at work on the computer at work? Other than being friends with, related to or directly involved in law enforcement. There are law enforcement positions where they can see into your computer and watch everything you do.
Would the fact that you regularly post on a forum be something you'd be happy to share with friends and family?
Yes, I DO share it with family and friends. They have never asked for the site or asked what my online name is, but if they did, I'd tell them.
Also, I leave my computer up and running most of the time. If my husband wanted to pick up my laptop and peruse my writings, he can do so. He may have done so, for all I know. I wouldn't care.
In fact, I have shown him threads and responses several times.
A lot of people post carefully to protect their identities while others openly post their photos and talk about personal details. Do you ever worry that the small details you post will add up to enough information for an Internet stranger to figure out who you are? Not necessarily with any evil intent, but do you worry about someone recognizing you on Facebook, through your work, or in your community without having expressly shared your identity?
It seems like just sharing your location, first name, and type of work could be enough to track down a lot of folks.
I'm not concerned about a stranger tracking me down, but today I deleted about 75% of a post in case someone who knows me reads it.
It could but the only time I was hit with a keylogger Avast popped immediately. Usually key loggers and viruses happen because someone was tricked into thinking that Paypal e-mailed them and then the click link and are done. In fact most people that complain about virus, malware of sorts if they were honest got them from porn site or watching illegal downloads.
I've got such spoof from my cell carrier, bank, dish, direct tv and several other banks. I keep getting emails from youtube that my video has been accepted. The only one that is disturbing is the youtube since it comes to my mail, not junk mail and I've never uploaded anything.
Always always ALWAYS resist the curiosity to click.

I've mentioned to my wife a few times that I post on here. And, quite frankly, I don't think I've written anything here that I wouldn't mind her seeing. Except my very occasional rants about my in-laws. She might take exception to those.
People can judge all they want. I have nothing to hide. It's not like my life is this grand spectacular marvel people want to look at as if it were the tabloids.
If people are that snoopy or gossipy, I wouldn't care to want to hang with them anyway. Read all you want.
I wouldn't outright solicit my personal information IRL or online anyway for obvious reasons.
I highly doubt people will be like "I think this is so and so" and hunt you down for your 411. If they did, other people would look at them funny, because a person speculating something and thinking it's "reality" can easily make themselves look crazy and psycho. Paranoid delusions can throw people off, ya know?

Anyone with enough time on their hands and enough interest could figure out my identity from my 5 1/2 years of posts, or even a fraction of them. The key point is the level of interest. I may **** some people off, but I'm just not important enough for anyone to harass, lol.
Some douche nozzle a few years back, who took exception to something I wrote, private messaged me portentously along the lines of "The eyes in the sky are watching you!!!" LMAO. I'm still here, so...
