I also had an Aunt tell me the same thing once too. She asked me where I bought my sweater. I told her Macy's and she said "It's not nice to pretend you're rich"
Next time I would say something like "It's amazing what you can find at the thrift store if you look carefully." It's not a lie, but you didn't answer the question either - though whoever asked it will think you did.
Some people try to throw you off balance and enjoy watching you squirm. I have no idea why, but I think it makes them feel powerful.
The only way I've successfully shut down this type of person was by smiling and saying, "Why would I care what YOU think?!" That was rude of me, but I'd been dealing with the comments for months. It finally shut him up, though.
People who are jealous will say anything to tear you down, even if it makes no sense. In high school, I had a rockin' little bod (sadly, not any longer), some little cheerleader chick saw her BF staring, apparently, and then yelled out to me in a snotty voice "Your breasts are too high". Too high??!!? WTF? All I could think to say was "And I'm not even wearing a bra!"
Aaahh, those were the days! Seriously it's just jealousy, of what? who knows?
Keep it short, don't even wonder about what they think. Next time just say "F**k you", "F**k off" or "F**k your life" and keep it moving. Trust me, they won't bother talking to you ever again. Haters gonna hate!!
This persons a loser. That's their problem. Unfortunately you have to deal with losers sometimes, ideally by just avoiding them, but otherwise take the high road and be polite. Don't waste your time or energy pouring gasoline on that fire by trying to tell them off or set them straight. You cant.

You should have stolen her boyfriend. He knew the real deal when he saw it.
