Have you ever directly observed this (i.e. eavesdropping, being a snoop or whatever) or heard second hand about being talking smack about you? You as a person, your appearance, something you've done.etc...were you at all surprised by how people viewed you? I often wonder how much people 'talk about me' this way; since I was out of the 'social loop' I've found that while most people aren't malicious, get them in a group and they practically relish malicious gossip about people. Well, SOME people. It's not something that keeps me up at night but I have wondered if colleagues or friends (supposed friends) have done this a lot to me. I don't think I have a lot to work on but I'm sure they could pick something.
It seems during arguments the truth also comes out. Out of the blue, a friend claimed I treated 'all my friends badly' because of a couple of things I did to him, which he perceived as me treating him badly. I cancelled an appointment at the last moment, because I felt sick (I'm indecisive, so sue me) and apologized for it. I got the feeling he wanted to hang onto this 'slight' even after the event. I have no time to justify myself anyway. But yeah getting away from my main point...
I get that too from some people, usually women, as I tend to stick to myself and not interact with others. I'm just really reserved and shy, always turning down invites lol, and people don't like that.
Some people are gonna talk smack no matter what, friends, familia or even strangers. Bottom line, you can't sweat that stuff, as long as you stay true to yourself and know you're being real, if people don't like that, sucks for them!
They usually just don't call it "bitching about someone" but probably use some manlier alternative phrasing like "talking some **** about some dude" or whatever.
