I guess it depends what the relative they're comparing you with looks like. If they say I look like Aunt Jenny, and I thought she was pretty, I'd be fine. I'd consider it a compliment. But if Aunt Jenny was a 300lb hideous beast, I'd be a little annoyed.
When I was a kid, people used to say I looked just like my dad when he was a kid. It didn't really bother me, even though I was a girl. In fact, when you put pictures of my Dad and me at the same age, side by side, I pretty much look like him with a blond wig. I kind of thought it was cool.

I've always thought it was cool, too. My siblings would compare how we look like our parents, like "I got mom's straight hair and you have dad's wavy hair" or looking at pictures of my sister as a kid that look exactly like my niece as a kid. It fosters a sense of belonging and togetherness, that we're all part of a big, connected family.
At my daughter's school one day, a parent asked me what her dad looked like so she could point him in the right direction to find us when he arrived. I said "just like her with a beard and beer belly". When he showed up later, the teacher came to me and said "I thought you were kidding...guess not ".
I took the same kiddo to the Dr. recently and she says "you must look like your dad"... my daughter might not have been offended, but I was like wth?! What a thing to say in front of Mom .
All three of our kids look so much like my husband or I that it's hard to compare them to other family members, but I could see how it might hurt a child's feelings when compared to aunt so-and-so or a distant cousin.
When I was little, sometimes people would tell me I look like my father or like my brother. I wasn't too crazy about it. I don't know why.
I avoid telling my younger relatives that they look like their parent, or like their sibling, because it might annoy them - do you agree?
Not really...it is what it is...every one will see a resemblance to someone in the family, though not always the same person. I can't see how it could/would be annoying, when it should be something to be proud of (I would think).
One guy had a picture of his family on his desk and got mad when someone noticed the picture and said "nice frame".. Don't sweat the small stuff.
