The topic of careers and work is rarely brought up in our family get-togethers. When I try to ask people about their jobs and careers I get one word answers. When I try to talk to my parents about my job/careers they are clearly uninterested. They would rather talk about issues that don't impact me directly like TV shows.

Is this odd or unusual in most families? How much does your family (parents, brothers and sisters) know about your work? Have they ever visited your office or workplace? Are they interested in seeing where you work?

my parents have no idea about what I do. I just tell them I work in an office. a few months pass and they will ask " what is it you do". we don't speak about that. it is that we are more concerned about the welfare of the family. At work I am just a number. I am dispensable. so I don't take work serious either. I do my best, but I know I am just a #. so I don't talk about it much to my wife or kids.

My mom doesn't really know much except for the general field. I'm sure she'd be interested if I told her, but I don't like talking about work.

My father does, because we used to work at the same place before he retired (fun lol!). My mom has no clue, my sister also is a co-worker, in fact we got our degrees together.

My husband's parents would not understand his high end technical job and my parents were never interested. '

My husband is the first one in his family to graduate from High School and went on to college and corporate life. Totally out of their frame of reference.

My late dad and mom never had the opportunity to finish even a primary education. They had no clue what one did in a biological career field and I never tried to raise their awareness. They had much greater, and basic, concerns in life.

I have an advanced degree and work in health care, but not in a well-known area of it.

I also cattle ranch.

My family never gets the name of my degreed job right. They just kind of butcher the title and add "and she RANCHES!" Amongst ourselves some of them affect a horrid drawl when speaking to me. Some seriously greet me with "Howdy." I laugh and love them all.
