Did you get an A in history class this semester?
For most C_D posters, "history" begins right around the time they were born +5 years. Since they never personally experienced prior times, those times must certainly have been "different."

It's a personal choice. But you don't have to write all kinds of news articles glamorizing it and convincing people they should follow a certain lifestyle.
It's not about pandering, it's about support - which I wish was around when I came to maturity and had to make my intentions known to people I dated *sigh*

I was fer sure about my CF orientation 20+ years before I found the very first support group in the early 90s: alt.support.childfree. That was a lonnnnng time, thinking I was alone, not having the vocabulary to describe my stance or the eloquence to shut down the dolts I encountered.

The media does tend to glamorize or describe the trend in a fashion that invites argument. That's what sells papers. If you hang around the support groups, the conversations are more mundane. That the media comes across as "promoting" or calling the decision "trendy" is egregiously wrong. Folks have been forgoing having children forever, it's just that the decision has become much easier to implement in the last 40 - 50 years with the advent of decent birth control. The acceptance is still the trial. That a person does not want to be a parent should be as acceptable a decision as those who do. Unfortunately, the pressure from some cultural groups and oppressive religious wingnuts still force some people to take on a role they don't desire. And the ones who suffer from that the most are the unwanted children brought into the world. That is the real evil being wrought by people who try to pressure us childfrees. You want unwanted children to be born. How sick is that?

Change "want" to "accept." I believe there are people who have such a strong character and sense of doing right, that even if circumstances land them in a situation they never wanted they end up doing a pretty decent job. I also believe those kind of people are quite rare.

Like Andrea Yates? Susan Smith? Diane Downs? All the wonderful parents in the news every day that abuse, kill and neglect their children.

About as much as you'll warm up to these live weasels we'd like to implant into your tender bits. No? Doesn't sound like fun? It's ok. You will want them once you have them.
