Well, I put up a Please Do Not Disturb sign on our front door when I got tired of UPS/Fed Ex etc. simply knocking on our door (to alert us of a package) which would then make our dog bark like Cujo which would then wake my sleeping baby -- a terrible fate.

I found that Do Not Disturb sign worked wonders if I just left it up all the time. You could try it when you're not expecting anyone.

Why not call first, preferably the day before but at least a couple of hours before, to let the person know you're coming? I could be in bed with a lover, or sleeping, or ill. I might not be dressed. Why do people think that's okay? I was not raised that way. You DO NOT show up at anyone's house without letting them know first. This habit is just way too Jerry Springer: well mannered people don't do this.

I especially expect my students to be ON TIME...neither early or late (not by more than five minutes either way, 10 at the max). I had one lady who showed up on two consecutive evenings after dark, banging on my door. I wasn't home the first time, and the second time wasn't alone and did not care to answer the door. This is an intrusion.

What is wrong with people???
I agree with all but one part. If you are out of bed, get dressed. That is more Jerry Springer than the other things you mention.

Not an issue for me.

Family always calls first, as they are not local.
I have no students.
Tradespeople and repairmen always call first.

I love friends dropping by unexpectedly, but they usually call first. It really brightens my day to strengthen those relationships.

I agree with the others - put a sign on the door since this is a sore spot with you.

I usually just don't answer the door if I'm not expecting anyone.

I can't say I've had this happen much -- apparently my friends and family are good at boundaries.

I've had repairmen show up without calling first -- however, only on dates in which a repair was previously scheduled, and usually with some ridiculous window like "7am-midnight". But I'm aware that they're coming that day.

Meh, doesn't bother me much. I never know who is going to be at my house when I get home or get up in the morning. I just leave my door unlocked so they don't need to knock. Put a sign on the post down the drive way "Enter at own risk, I might be naked, Not responsible for possible blindness".
