Can a person be both an introvert and an extrovert? I do tend to be a thinker, and like to be alone at times. And I avoid large get-togethers. Too noisy and I prefer one-on-one conversations. I tend to get lost in group talks and just fade out. HOWEVER, when I am with someone I am completely at ease with (my husband and kids for sure) I can be loud and goofy. Singing songs really loud, joking and just having fun. So, is this still an introvert?

Yes, the term is ambiversion. You sound like a solid introvert to me.

It helps to think of it in terms of how you like to re-energize.

If you get your energy from being at home in your quiet space, then you're an introvert.

If you get your energy from being around a lot of other people, you're an extrovert.

Ahhh. Well, then I'd be an introvert for sure. I tend to shut down around alot of other people. I feel at ease when I am alone.

BUT ... you can still seem outgoing when around other people. You just don't want to/have to be the life of the party.

Introvert here, I need to prepare myself for anything involving large groups of strangers or acquaintances. Then I need to wind down from the event.

I'm the same way. I saw something one of those funny internet cards the other day that said something like, To an introvert, canceling plans is like taking a hit of heroin.

I like that quote. I've felt that way many a time when I've eased out of an event I was to attend. I enjoy going out interacting with others to a point. I was caught a couple of times with my headphones on listening to music in the past; just the other night a lady screamed at me, "are you listening to music?". Well I only had one earphone in at the time, so I was tuned in to the people around me. I know, not nice, but you had to be in the moment to understand.
