I'm 37, my wife is 37, and our son is 19. He has a new GF he met at some party around Halloween. This is his 2nd GF. My wife liked the first GF even though she was a bit promiscuous. She absolutely hates this one, Rachel. Rachel is kind of like the last GF, but significantly more " bad girl". She's got a Carpe Diem tattoo near the quote " What's meant to be will find a way". She's planning a third one, a butterfly ( how original). She drinks more than the first one and dresses pretty skimpy( even in the Chicago cold). Anyway, my wife hates her, seethes when Rachel's at the house and seethes when those two leave for their date. I don't mind her because I know its a phase. He's 19, his hormones, not his brain, are doing the thinking. He's probably having a grand time. My wife refers to this girl as " Kelly Bundy 2.0"( remember her?) I've never told my wife this, but Rachel is alot like my wife was 18 years ago( minus the tattoos). Should I just tell her " relax, he's not marrying her, she'll be gone by April"?

Tell her both of these things. Oh, wait! You married her! Maybe you should pick one or the other to tell her, not both!

Hey, Irish is back, and still married! And, still navigating the messy relationship between your wife and son I see. Given what you've written in the past, why say anything at all? It won't change your wife's mind, and you certainly won't win any brownie points by pointing out the similarities between the wife and the girlfriend. Relationships formed at 19 are rarely for life, as you pointed out. Your wife doesn't have to like her, and your son doesn't have to have his mother's approval to date her. So, I would stay out of it, except to make sure your son is taking precautions to avoid an unintended pregnancy.

Son and I are good. Wife and I are better, but not perfect, still working

So glad to hear from you again on C-D.

Tell your wife to just smile pleasantly at your son's new GF. If Mom protests too much Son may rebel and decide to keep GF just to spite his mother. If Mom doesn't make a big deal about the GF she probably will be gone in a few months (unless she gets pregnant).

That ship has sailed. She tells him often " break up with that useless tramp" or some variation of that. Again, his situation mirrors mine, my mom hated my wife at 18. My mom has learned to tolerate her through the years, mostly because she's the mother of her grandson and she probably thought " I love my son and this girl loves my son, so that's something in common". I'm still betting he gets bored of her and goes after another one.

Does it matter? Do you really think if you go to your wife and tell her to keep her mouth shut that she will?
